The Head of Nursing will provide strategic and operational leadership for all nursing services across multiple GP practices. The postholder willbe responsible forensuring high-quality, safe, effective, and consistent nursing care across sites, including long-term condition management, treatment room services, immunisations, chronic disease clinics, screening programmes, and clinical governance.

This role will lead and develop nursing teams (Practice Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, HCAs, Nursing Associates, Phlebotomists) ensuring workforce capability, compliance, patient safety, and excellent patient experience across the organisation.


Main duties of the job

Provide strong visible leadership to nursing teams across multiple GP sites.

Lead, manage and support nursing staff including recruitment, supervision, appraisal, and performance management.

Develop and implement consistent nursing standards and operating procedures across all practices.

Promote a culture of learning, accountability, compassion and continuous improvement.

Be professionally accountable for nursing practice across the organisation.

Ensure compliance with CQC standards, infection prevention and control, safeguarding, and medicines management.

Lead audit programmes and clinical quality improvement initiatives.

Ensure robust incident reporting, learning, and implementation of action plans.

Maintain oversight of complaints relating to nursing services and support resolution.

Ensure delivery of high-quality nursing services including:

Long-term condition management (e.g., diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension)

Immunisations and vaccination programmes

Cervical screening

Wound care and dressings

Ear care (if applicable)

Travel health (if applicable)

Health promotion and preventative care

Support development of enhanced nursing clinics and services to meet patient demand.

Ensure safe staffing levels and appropriate skill mix across all sites.

Develop workforce plans aligned to service growth and contractual requirements.

Support nurse training, competency sign-off, and professional development.

Ensure all staff complete mandatory training and remain compliant.

Job responsibilities

Leadership & Management

Patient Care Delivery

Ensure delivery of high-quality nursing services including:

Long-term condition management (e.g., diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension)

Immunisations and vaccination programmes

Cervical screening

Wound care and dressings

Ear care (if applicable)

Travel health (if applicable)

Health promotion and preventative care

Support development of enhanced nursing clinics and services to meet patient demand.

Workforce Planning & Staff Development

Ensure safe staffing levels andappropriate skillmix across all sites.

Develop workforce plans aligned to service growth and contractual requirements.

Support nurse training, competency sign-off, and professional development.

Ensure all staff complete mandatory training and remain compliant.

Support revalidation requirements for NMC-registered staff.

Medicines Management & Prescribing (where applicable)

Provide leadership for safe medicines management processes across nursing teams.

Ensureappropriate storage, administration and documentation of vaccines and medicines.

Support and oversee nurse prescribing practice (if nurse prescribers are employed).

Ensure compliance with cold chain management, PGDs/PSDs, and vaccination protocols.

Act as a senior lead for safeguarding practice across nursing teams.

Ensure staff are trained toappropriate safeguardinglevels and follow organisational procedures.

Support escalation and documentation of safeguarding concerns.

Operational & Performance Oversight

QOFand LCSrelated delivery

Chronic disease review completion

Screening coverage

Appointment utilisation and access

Work collaboratively with Practice Managers and Partners to improve access and capacity.

Standardise nursing appointment templates and triage models whereappropriate.

CQC & Regulatory Readiness

Lead nursing preparation for CQC inspections and ensure readiness across all sites.

Ensure policies, protocols and training are consistently implemented.

Maintain oversight of evidencerequiredfor compliance in clinical domains.

Contribute to strategic planning and service expansion across the organisation.

Lead implementation of new nursing pathways andevidence-based practice.

Identifyopportunities for nurse-led services to reduce GP workload and improve patient outcomes.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

Work closely with GPs, Practice Managers, communityservicesand allied health professionals.

Represent nursing leadership in organisational meetings and external forums whererequired.

Promotestrong communicationacross sites to ensure consistent patient care delivery.

Essential Skills and Attributes

* Strong leadership and people management skills.

Qualifications

* Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
* Degree level qualification in nursing or equivalent experience.
* Evidence of continued professional development in primary care nursing.
* Leadership or management qualification (or willingness to work towards).
* Advanced clinical practice qualification or experience.
* Experience working at PCN level or leading integrated care initiatives.
* Experience of service redesign or transformation.


Experience
