You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technician community comes from various backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate these, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.
If you succeed, you can look forward to a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently ranked in the top 50 of Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call if you choose the standard maintenance contract.
About the role (External)
Our technicians serve as the essential link between the team leader and operatives.
Technicians specialize in various disciplines. For this role, you'll become a specialist in Track: responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This is a manual role involving working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures.
Our technicians work outdoors in all weather conditions, at all times of the day or night. You may be involved in demanding manual tasks, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Being safety-conscious, respectful of rules, and a team player is critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team
As a natural team player, you'll also be able to lead when asked by the team leader. You'll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure the team has the right competencies to meet safety standards. You'll also role model safe working behaviors and confidently challenge potential safety risks to ensure everyone's safety.
You matter to us
Today's technicians can become tomorrow's team leaders. Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is vital. We will provide training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If you're transitioning from another industry, structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence to pursue a rewarding career in rail.
Our technicians play a crucial role in maintenance teams. While rail experience isn't mandatory, you must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following requirements:
* Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work.
* Effective communication: Strong skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and colleagues.
* Technical skills: Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to your discipline.
* Safety: Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem-solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions; keep skills and knowledge up to date.
* Willingness to learn: Continuously develop skills and stay updated with standards and procedures.
* Relevant qualification: Ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.
Additional information
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends, with a changing pattern.
* Outdoor work: Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
* Safe working: Employment subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight tests.
* Driving: Must have a valid category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
