Newcastle City Council SEND Outreach Service is looking to appoint a 0.6 FTE specialist teacher. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is committed to promoting a child centred and inclusive approach to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people with special education needs including speech, language and communication and cognition and learning needs.
The SEND Outreach Service team currently includes specialist teachers, specialist Nursery Nurses and specialist Learning Support Assistants who work on a peripatetic basis to provide a range of advice, support and training for schools and settings across mainstream schools in Newcastle. Currently the team working into schools and post 16 settings has 10 specialist teachers and five Learning Support Assistants.
The job will require working in an agile manner; most of the day to be spent in schools advising SENCos, teachers and support staff on the how best to make provision for pupils with learning and speech and language needs. Time is set aside for meeting other members of the team as well as planning and preparation work. The successful applicant will have the option to work from home as well as offices located in the Civic Centre and Westgate Community College. A laptop and mobile phone are provided to support required work.

The main duties of the specialist teacher will be to:
Respond in a pro-active and collaborative way to requests made by schools and post 16 settings for advice and support for children and young people with special educational needs, particularly cognition and learning and speech and language needs
Support schools to develop practice and systems designed to support children and young people with such needs,
Work with schools to set targets and plan provision for children and young people,
Provide training to colleagues in mainstream schools and settings.
