Position Overview
Band 2 Dental Receptionist vacancy at our Haywards Heath Emergency Dental Centre. We are looking for a caring Receptionist to join the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust Emergency Dental Service team based at our Haywards Heath Health Centre. The Emergency Dental Service runs on evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Sessions run from 5.30pm to 10pm on Monday evenings, and 08.30am to 1pm on weekends and bank holidays.
Key Responsibilities
* Represent the Dental Team at the clinic in a professional manner at all times.
* Work in a front‑of‑house position, handling patient reception under pressure.
* Participate in annual performance reviews and regular supervision.
* Ensure all patients’ records, both paper and electronic, are kept up to date, correctly stored and filed for confidentiality purposes. Follow the Data Protection Act.
* Ensure every patient completes a medical history form.
* Advise daytime staff of any relevant issues by using the communications book.
* Attend mandatory Basic Life Support training to be competent in providing advice in the event of a medical emergency.
* Process all enquiries at the clinic from patients, general public, service providers, and medical professionals, and refer any queries appropriately.
* Take all telephone calls to the clinic from members of the public requiring emergency dental care, ensuring that all are dealt with in a professional manner.
* Telephone dentists on the short‑notice cancellation list when necessary.
* Collect all patient charges and record details accurately on the cash sheet, ensuring that the financial procedures are adhered to at all times.
* Ask patients appropriate questions relating to their dental problem and book patients who require emergency treatment or have the dentist call back with telephone advice.
* Provide patients with directions to the dental clinic when required.
* Ensure all patient records are available for the dentist for booked patients.
* Keep the clinic reception and waiting area clean and tidy, removing any out‑of‑date information.
* Use the dental software package provided at the clinic to book appointments and input accurate patient information.
Required Qualifications
* Secondary level education with literacy and numeracy skills to GCSE level or equivalent.
* Flexible to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
* Well organised, able to prioritise and work on own initiative without direct supervision, yet a team player delivering excellent patient care.
* Good communication skills and ability to work under pressure.
