Overview

SEN Teaching Assistant (Secondary School)

Location: Horley, Surrey

Annual salary: £18,000 - £24,000 depending on experience

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30 - 16:30 (Term time only)


The School

A tailored teaching environment specifically designed for students aged 11-16 diagnosed with SEMH, Autism, ADHD, or associated needs. Their unique approach includes:

* Small Class Sizes: Only 6 to 8 pupils per class, ensuring personalised attention and support.
* Expert Staff: The team is highly trained in special education, providing a compassionate and effective learning experience.
* Employability and Life Skills: Employability and life skills programmes, nurturing independence and opening future doors for their pupils.
* Enrichment and Personal Development Clubs (EPDCs): Students are also provided with the invaluable opportunities of engaging with a number of personal development clubs.


Key Duties

* Encouraging inclusion and acceptance within the classroom, promoting cooperative interaction among students.
* Supporting disadvantaged students to reduce the attainment gap.
* Providing helpful feedback to students on their progress and achievements.
* Working closely with subject teachers to create a positive learning environment.
* Encouraging independence and using strategies to acknowledge and reward achievement and self-reliance.
* Promoting positive values, attitudes, and good student behaviour.
* Promptly addressing conflicts and incidents according to our Restorative Behaviour policy and encouraging students to take responsibility for their behaviour.
* Assisting in the administration of assessments and tests, including exam invigilation.
* Liaising sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with teachers, the SENDCo and other senior leaders participating in feedback sessions or meetings as directed.
* Establishing constructive relationships tailored to individual needs and communicating effectively with other professionals to support student achievement and progress, in collaboration with teachers.
* Supervising students during visits, trips, and out-of-hours learning activities as required within the role's scope.
* Supporting the induction of new students as necessary.
* Undertaking necessary professional development, including relevant training opportunities.
* Engaging in training to develop skills required for the role.
* Participating fully in the school community, promoting its mission and ethos to staff and students.
* Adhering to all school policies and procedures, including safeguarding and child protection policies, and fulfilling Prevent duty responsibilities.
* Continuing personal development and actively participating in staff review and development plans.
* Promote personal, social and career development in our students for career progression and for progression in general life.
* Please note that duties will vary and you will be expected to contribute to the overall aims of the School when required.


Essential Criteria

* Previous experience in a similar role
* Passion for SEND, SEMH and Trauma Informed education principles
* Some understanding of child development
* Some experience of working with people with a range of special needs
* GCSE Maths and English Language qualification minimum Grade 4/C (or equivalent, such as functional skills)
* Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures
* Passion, presence and personality, and a motivation to engage continuous improvement in students' welfare, teaching and learning, pastoral and inclusion provisions
* Relentless drive and uncompromising approach for high standards in and out of the classroom for all
* Empathy with children and young people, having the student at the heart of everything

Successful applicants will be subject to pre-employment safeguarding checks including an enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS) check.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and we are therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
