We are looking for a motivated, proactive Materials Engineer to join our Materials and Corrosion team within The Buildings Unit (BLD).

Overview

You will have profound knowledge of durability of concrete, corrosion of metals and/or coatings. You will work with other Materials Engineers, Civil and Structural Engineers on unique, technically demanding projects across a range of sectors, including new and existing infrastructure and buildings (bridges, tunnels, water treatment and hydropower structures, jetties, etc.). You will prepare durability assessments, evaluate condition and performance of structures, develop remedial and maintenance strategies, and provide advice on sustainable solutions and asset management. You will engage with major asset owners in buildings, infrastructure, water and energy sectors, with potential work in road and rail as well.

Responsibilities

* Preparing durability assessments by identifying deterioration mechanisms of structural elements and developing solutions to meet design life
* Providing support to clients on the selection, specification, performance, deterioration and repair of materials in structures
* Planning and carrying out investigations to evaluate current condition, performance and residual life of existing structures
* Root cause analyses and forensic engineering of deteriorating materials and structures
* Developing protection, maintenance and repair strategies, including cathodic protection
* Carrying out research into new materials to support innovative applications
* Analyzing data and producing reports and presentations that meet project requirements
* Understanding, supporting and influencing clients, preparing and reviewing reports, and providing guidance for publication
* Contributing to global projects, providing technical input and ensuring deliverables meet British, European or International Standards
* Ensuring effective communication with project teams, clients and stakeholders

Candidate specification

As a professional in the construction industry, you have a foundation in materials technology within civil engineering and an interest in growing technical and management skills. You have experience writing technical reports and presenting material to colleagues and clients. You are willing to take on new problems, manage time effectively, and work on varied commissions with multiple stakeholders. Site visits may involve confined spaces and working near railways, rivers, boats, and heights, with travel predominantly in the South West, Midlands and Wales, and potentially national or international travel. You should be able to interpret complex technical information and present to various audiences, and be willing to travel nationally or internationally and work non-standard hours when necessary.

You will also be able to demonstrate the following

* Master’s degree in Engineering or Science (construction Materials is preferred); PhD or equivalent is highly beneficial
* Chartered or working towards chartership (IEng acceptable)
* Knowledge of civil engineering assets and materials (concrete, metals, masonry, coatings)
* Experience in inspection, investigation, monitoring and assessment of structures
* Willingness to travel and occasional night/weekend work
* Continuous learning mindset and problem-solving ability
* Flexibility to develop new knowledge beyond existing fields and travel for projects
* Willingness to work across national or international projects
