Associate Professor in Mental Health Law (Part-time (0.2 FTE), Fixed Term for Two Years)

University of East Anglia

* Location: Norwich
* Salary: £56,921 per year
* Contract: Part-time
* Posted: 1 day ago

Starting salary from £56,921 per annum (pro rata), dependent on skills and experience, with an annual increment up to £65,814 per annum (pro rata).

We are seeking to recruit an outstanding academic in the field of Mental Health Law. This exciting role is based in Norwich Medical School on the main University campus, located within the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychological Therapies. Given the nature of the role and delivery, the post holder would be supported to conduct most elements of the role from home.

The post is advertised following NHS commissioning of a Postgraduate Certificate in Mental Health Law. This programme relates to wider NHS demand for enhancing the number and knowledge of Multi Professional Approved Clinicians (MPACs) in NHS services.

The role will involve contributions to teaching sessions, primarily delivered remotely (with some delivery across the East of England region), to groups of senior clinicians who are completing practice portfolios for subsequent qualification as MPACs. In addition, you would contribute towards all elements of programme assessment (e.g. marking of essays, tribunal assessments, and formative assessments), and take on other roles in supporting trainees as a personal adviser. Finally, you would support engagement of NHS partners to support recruitment of suitable candidates for the programme, working to promote the role of Multi Professional Approved Clinicians within NHS mental health trusts.

More broadly, we anticipate that this role will support research activity and scholarship in Mental Health Law within the School, Faculty, and wider University, particularly in the context of anticipated developments in Mental Health legislation. This will also involve collaboration with partners in the highly-regarded UEA Law School, based in the historic Earlham Hall building on the UEA campus. There may additionally be opportunities to support other programmes in the department.

Applicants would be expected to have appropriate legal professional training and/or legal practice experience, and relevant teaching and training experience, which would ideally include teaching and training both within and outside the academic context. In particular, it is essential that applicants have a high degree of knowledge and practical experience of the application of relevant English and Welsh legislation concerning Mental Health Law, and specifically the Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and ECHR. Experience of the application of Mental Health Law in the context of the NHS would be a significant advantage.

The post is available immediately on a part-time (0.2 FTE) fixed term basis for two years subject to potential renewal up to four years, depending on NHS funding. Given the current configuration of the training programme it is necessary for the working day to be a Friday when we anticipate that teaching on the programme is to be delivered.

Further information on our great benefits package, including 44 days annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays and additional University Customary days (pro rata for part-time), can be found on our page.

Closing date: 20 February 2025

The University holds an Athena Swan Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality.
