About The Role
Balfour Beatty Power T&D are currently looking for a Team Leader - OHL Foundation Design to join their team in Derby.
Role Purpose
Lead the OHL Foundations Team to work with the project team, designers and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives.
Take responsibility for design delivery and design suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects with particular focus on Overhead Line (OHL) foundations. Provide advice as to the constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works designs for Power T&D business. The role will require collaborating with other design teams such as Geotechnical & Geo-Environmental, OHL team, Structures team, Construction team and other stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
* To undertake the design and co‑ordination of foundation and geotechnical designs required on OHL, Cabling and Substation projects, from initial feasibility assessment through development to detail design & delivery phase and scheme close ensuring completion in accordance with programme, cost and quality requirements, including where appropriate, preparation or support of in‑house temporary works design.
* Ensure the timely and quality delivery of designs. Preparation of reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical level compliant with required client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
Key Responsibilities
* Assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project, including undertaking QRA for OHL foundations, geotechnical desktop assessments, foundation capacity checks and geotechnical risk assessments, including interpretation of ground investigation information.
* Produce foundation selection report, foundation intrusive specifications, piling specifications, pile test specifications.
* Specify ground investigation and testing, piling works and other works.
* Provide on site assessment of geological conditions leading to design decisions for applicable engineering solutions.
* Support provision of designs, volumes and quantities for tender submissions to ensure upon contract award, the budget, programme and specification can be achieved.
* Attend testing and supervise installation as required to verify suitability of design and quality of construction.
* Undertake design of OHL foundations (pad, raft, pile & pile cap) including reinforcement provisioning.
* Work closely with Project Teams to maintain common objectives and ensure work undertaken aligns with project priorities.
* Liaise with appropriate personnel to achieve optimum installation procedures and undertake site visits as necessary.
* Embed "Safety by Design" principles in all activities, managing safety through appropriate life cycle designs that minimise risks to personnel and property.
* Analyse contract documents to ensure correct interpretation of customers/consultants’ intentions.
* Design foundations and geotechnical works to be supplied and constructed in accordance with contract documents and current practices.
* Correspond with Business Units, customer, consultant, vendor (sub‑contractor) to ensure satisfactory progress and quality; visit sites and offices to discuss and solve problem issues as appropriate.
* Assist training of new designers/trainees.
* Undertake other duties as may be required by the Design lead or Design Manager.
* Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with design output.
Skills Required
* Familiar with National Grid (NG) and Scottish and Southern Energy Network (SSEN) technical specifications.
* Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil engineering and/or geotechnical engineering.
* Professional membership with either ICE or Geol Soc and working towards Chartered Engineer status.
* Strong, proven post‑graduate experience in civil engineering industry.
* Experience supervising sub‑consultants or subcontractors.
* Proven experience designing civil engineering works.
* Strong experience managing design of civil or geotechnical engineering works.
* IT literate (Microsoft Word, Excel, CAD).
* Extensive experience of geotechnical design.
* Experience using Tekla Tedds.
