Overview
As an Electrical Senior Design Engineer you will be an important member of the Engineering Design Team and will be required to work with the Principal Engineer(s), Design Team, Design Manager(s) and Design Leads to deliver design to the highest quality to GT process and in compliance with the BMS and H&S Regulations. This is a technical role, engaged directly on projects, which requires competency in technical design delivery in the water and wastewater industry. The Senior Design Engineer can have line management responsibility for design engineers of the same discipline, plus non-discipline design engineers/others if required. You will contribute to the engineering governance of your discipline design activities, ensuring that design integrates with other discipline design production activities, providing technical support to the supply chain procurement activities and supporting site activities as required. You will also support the Discipline Manager and Principal Engineer(s) for knowledge sharing and development of the discipline engineers, including mentoring and support of early careers.
Responsibilities
* Provide technical compliance and quality on design outputs. Default checker for design outputs to ensure technical assurance and quality control.
* Operate as discipline lead for a project.
* Seek optimal solutions/efficient designs that balance capital and operational cost benefits.
* Assist the Principal Designer Lead in ensuring CDM regulations compliance.
* Design for buildability, safe construction, and operation, working alongside project delivery peers.
* Assist in ensuring procedural governance is adhered to.
* Work as part of the Design team to ensure scheme designs adhere to client specifications and standards.
* Work as part of the Design team to ensure full compliance with relevant Health, Safety and Environmental Legislation.
* Promote innovation, value engineering and digital design.
* Technical problem solving throughout the project life cycle, from concept design through final construction support, to identify and mitigate issues through technical governance and risk management.
* Assist with pre-contract design activities.
* Provide lessons learnt on projects to the Design Team and Discipline Design Manager(s), covering good and bad practices to feed into future schemes.
* Line Management of multi-disciplinary Design Engineers.
* Share and impart knowledge to our teams, with mentoring and development of the expanding design team.
* Developing and supporting staff towards accreditation with professional bodies (e.g., ICE, IET, IMechE, IChemE).
Qualifications & Experience
* Proficient in the use of modelling software such as ETAP to carry out HV & LV modelling, including protection & grading studies, system load flow and short circuit calculations.
* Proficient with AutoCAD/Draftsight.
* Competent in generating electrical installation packs, including HV & LV cable calculations, single line diagrams, cable block diagrams, termination details & cable schedules.
* Competent in generating layouts for electrical switch rooms, cable routes & substations.
* Competent in the organisation & management of consultants in earthing design & studies.
* Selection and appraisal of suppliers and their design submissions.
* Knowledge of C&G 2382-18 BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificates and HV standards & compliance.
* Educated to Degree level in Engineering or other equivalent qualification preferable.
* Demonstrable experience of +7 years working within the Municipal Water and Wastewater industries, with a variety of clients.
* Preference for Chartered Member of a recognised professional Engineering body.
* Competent in a contracting / consulting environment, with commercial awareness.
* Excellent knowledge of multi-disciplinary engineering design in water engineering.
* Competent with strong experience in checking & approving discipline design packages.
* Competent with strong experience in reviewing subcontractors' documentation.
* Knowledge of current H&S legislation and British Standards and experience in applying them across designs.
* Experience of working in accordance with QA and H&S procedures.
* Excellent Communication and Stakeholder management skills.
* Excellent IT skills - with experience of using Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Cost / Performance management systems.
