Head of Process Engineering

Chemring Energetics UK is a global business providing a range of equipment based on energetic materials for defence, civil defence and key commercial customers. We have an exciting and rare opportunity for a Head of Process Engineering to join us.


Are you a strategic leader with a passion for engineering excellence? In this role, you will provide critical leadership and technical guidance to support existing products, ensure compliance with all relevant standards and specifications, and drive operational and strategic plans that align with business goals.


Reporting to the Operations Director, you will lead and support the Operations Engineering team, ensuring management, training, and process initiatives are fully aligned with business requirements while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance. You will oversee work packages, guide the development and enhancement of existing products, and ensure all engineering activities meet programme safety, performance, and quality standards.


We are seeking a proactive and experienced engineering leader who can drive continuous improvement, manage complex projects, and inspire teams to achieve excellence.


Key Accountabilities & Duties:

* Carry out all activities in full compliance with H&SE legislation, company policies, and procedures, reporting unsafe acts or conditions via the Near Miss system.
* Provide technical advice on the requirements and performance of non-energetic and energetic products.
* Interpret test and evaluation results and trends, ensuring appropriate technical requirements, risk registers, programmes, and resource plans are in place.
* Deliver assigned work packages to meet customer requirements, budget, schedule, and quality standards.
* Lead the Process Support Engineering Team to ensure products meet programme safety and performance requirements.
* Maintain knowledge of relevant HSE, technical, and legislative developments.
* Provide best practice leadership to ensure CAPA processes are robust and responsive.
* Manage the department KPI’s and deliverables, allocating resources in line with business priorities.
* Maintain and update documentation including specifications, drawings, technical reports, risk documentation, data packs, Bill of Materials, and methods.
* Support the design and conduct of safe trials and tests, and analyse technical data to form conclusions and recommendations.
* Lead the development and talent pipeline for CEUK technical expertise, supporting training and development across operations.
* Represent the operational engineering team in customer-facing technical matters.
* Conduct staff objectives, reviews, and professional development management.


The Candidate:

* Must have personal commitment to Safety, Quality and Environmental standards.
* Strong bias for action to identify potential problems and provide risk mitigation methods.
* Continually seeks to identify new ideas and implement opportunities that deliver business benefit.
* Ability to build and develop effective relationships to improve performance.
* Knowledge of company policies and procedures to ensure full compliance.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Proven managerial and leadership skills to ensure success.
* Good commercial awareness and ability to communicate with external stakeholders.


Qualifications/Experience:

* Degree/HND in a suitable Engineering discipline or equivalent.
* Relevant experience leading engineering/technical teams in complex disciplines.
* Understanding of engineering processes, particularly process/manufacturing engineering disciplines.
* Experience in data management within MRP/ERP systems.
* Obsolescence management experience.
* Experience in structured process improvement and capacity/constraint methodologies.
* Engineering design, calculation, and analysis experience.
* Extensive experience in engineering problem-solving within a production environment.
* Familiarity with MS Office packages essential.
* NEBOSH or IOSH qualification advantageous.
