About Us

Do you have experience of working in youth work settings with the ability or potential to lead a small team delivering Fire Cadets at Walton Fire Station? If so, have you thought about using these skills and experience, and learning new ones, in a Fire Service setting?

At Surrey Fire and Rescue Service we are putting prevention at the heart of our Service, and we are looking for a Fire Cadet Coordinator who is ready for the challenge of positively engaging with young people in the Elmbridge area, setting up and running a brand-new Fire Cadet Unit at Walton Fire Station.

About the Role

The Fire Cadet Coordinator role will be the foundation for the safe running of the new unit, which will be based at Walton Fire Station. The unit will meet every Wednesday evening, during school term time from 5pm to 6:30pm.

Key responsibilities include:

10. Ensuring that there are enough personnel to run the unit safely each week, including liaising with operational personnel to support the programme
11. Recruiting cadets from the local area and maintaining accurate, confidential information about them
12. Ensuring all activities are appropriately risk assessed and will meet the criteria for the awards the cadets will work towards
13. Developing opportunities to expand Fire Cadets into other parts of Surrey
14. Representing Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) at The National Fire Chief's Council (NFCC) Fire Cadet forums

The Fire Cadets will work towards Fire Cadet Award 1 as well as a BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire and Rescue Services in the community.

Delivery and coordination of the awards will be undertaken by the Fire Cadet Coordinator, ensuring workbooks are completed to a high standard and that activities that support the awards are appropriate and engaging for the cadets. The Fire Cadet Coordinator will be responsible for Fire Cadets being entered for their qualifications in a timely way and following guidance from the Cadet Vocational College and NFCC.

You will ensure that children and young people are safeguarded at all times, following and implementing Service Safeguarding and Health and Safety policies and practices, alongside promoting and delivering youth work practice that is pro-social, restorative, trauma informed, is strengths based and develops protective factors.

Your Application

In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills and align with

15. Ability to build rapport with young people and their families as well as with Service managers, personnel, and with partner agencies in Surrey
16. A suitable youth work or teaching qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience, showing an understanding of how children and young people learn and have an awareness of protective factors, trauma informed, restorative and pro-social practices
17. Experience of co-ordinating people, delivering activities and qualifications to young people and evaluating the outcomes or can evidence the potential to do so
18. Excellent communications skills, verbal and written, with the ability to build rapport, relationships and influence personnel in a range of environments
19. Ability to use IT effectively, including databases, spreadsheets and Microsoft Office 365

To apply, we request that you submit a CV and you will be asked the following 4 questions:

20. Describe a time when you successfully built rapport with a young person and their family, while also working collaboratively with service managers or partner agencies. What approach did you take, and what was the outcome?
21. Please outline your relevant youth work or teaching qualification, or equivalent experience. How has this equipped you with an understanding of how children and young people learn, and how do you apply trauma-informed, restorative, or pro-social practices in your work?
22. Tell us about a time when you coordinated a team or delivered an activity or qualification to young people. How did you evaluate its success, and what did you learn from the experience?
23. Effective communication and IT skills are essential in this role. Can you provide an example of how you've used both verbal/written communication and digital tools (e.g., databases, spreadsheets, Microsoft Office 365) to influence or support others in a professional setting?
