Eton College is seeking an enthusiastic and committed individual with experience working in a library or archives setting (or relevant qualification), good communication skills, and a flexible approach to join our small, busy team.
Eton College Library, established in the 1440s, houses over 150,000 rare books and manuscripts dating from the 9th to the 21st century. The collection is used by researchers, for teaching pupils at Eton, and groups from other schools.
The Library Assistant’s role supports core service needs, including public services and collection promotion, as well as management and cataloguing of collections. This is a permanent, part-time position (25 hours per week), suitable for someone seeking experience with special collections.
Due to the department’s needs, interviews may be held before the closing date, and the job may close early if many applications are received. Early application is advised.

Main Duties
Key responsibilities:
Public services
* Support reader services, including invigilation and retrieval
* Contribute to remote enquiry services and virtual reading room sessions
* Support teaching and visits, including installing/de-installing displays and liaising with staff
* Assist in coordinating displays for visitors and deliver tours
* Contribute content to social media and publications, managing social media contributions
* Contribute to exhibitions
* Serve as first point of contact for library users and enquiries on a rota basis
Collection management and cataloguing
* Assist in auditing, rationalisation, and storage of collections
* Help with conservation and preservation efforts
* Catalogue collection items, update records, and perform data cleaning
Other
* Perform other duties as reasonably expected and appropriate for the role

The Ideal Candidate
Essential:
* Experience in a library or archives setting or relevant qualification
* Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office
* Good communication skills
Desirable:
* Experience with cataloguing and preservation issues
* Degree in a relevant discipline
* Experience with special collections or heritage sector
* Interest in rare books and manuscripts

Working Pattern
This is a permanent, part-time role working 25 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend hours scheduled in advance. The role involves some lone working, lifting library materials, and ladder use.
