Customer Engineer - Southampton
Posting Date: 28 Apr 2025
Unit: Business
Location: Bishops Waltham, Southampton, United Kingdom
If you’re a natural people-person – someone who enjoys solving problems and learning new skills – this customer-facing role will fit perfectly around your life.
We have 2 positions available: Customer Engineer and Specialist Engineer.
As our Customer Engineer and Specialist Engineer, you’ll partner with a Technical Delivery Advisor from our Manchester Mobile Centre, working in the field and virtually. Your primary focus will be fault finding and fixing assets called Street Hubs (click to see what we mean), mainly located in large towns, cities, stadiums, and train stations.
These hubs are modern digital screen units that reinvent the iconic public phone box for our digital age!
What makes them modern and high tech? Over 900 street hubs are located in high-footfall areas, serving millions daily. They feature calling and Wi-Fi capabilities, with digital screens displaying commercial and community content, and are touch-enabled for local information, navigation, and charging ports.
When not fixing Street Hubs, you’ll be expected to think on your feet, working solo on either a RAN site (Radio Access Network) to boost our 4G and 5G EE network performance or maintaining payphone kiosks.
Job responsibilities include:
* Street Hub assets: install, set up, optimize, and repair (e.g., restart or change settings).
* Payphone Kiosks: repair faults, change glass panels, perform general maintenance.
* RAN (Radio Access Network): fix network issues, swap faulty equipment, run cabling, perform health checks, interrogate alarms, and activate sites, working with our Manchester Mobile Centre team.
* HM Prison Service: repair phones in prisons, working in pairs with security clearance (minimum 5 years UK residency).
* Conduct simple Wi-Fi and mobile signal surveys, recommend installation locations, and install access points.
As a Specialist Engineer, additional responsibilities include:
* Technical tasks: configuring equipment, diagnostics, cabling, requiring electrical qualifications or willingness to complete the 18th edition C&G electrical standard.
* Field work: leading installations, repairs, and upgrades, ensuring street asset serviceability and safety, coordinating with stakeholders.
* Safety: maintaining safety for the public and colleagues.
* Customer interaction: engaging effectively with customers, suppliers, and management, demonstrating empathy and listening skills.
Check out our Engineer page here for a video showcasing a typical day.
Must haves:
* A valid manual UK driving license, with a 90-minute travel expectation.
* Comfortable working at heights (rooftops, high-rise buildings).
* No technical experience required for the Customer Engineer role, but customer service, problem-solving, and a technical learning mindset are valued. Relevant skills and experience will be prioritized if applications are high.
What we’ll do for you:
Provide a daily schedule, uniform, laptop, mobile, and van. Offer in-house training including NRSWA, PASMA, IPAF, and support towards an 18th Edition C&G electrical standard.
For the Specialist Engineer, attend and pass the 18th Edition C&G course to support the team.
Benefits of the role include:
* Salary: £30,458 for Customer Engineer and up to £33,331 for Specialist Engineer after qualification.
* BT Pension scheme with minimum 5% employee and up to 10% employer contributions.
* 22 days’ annual leave + 8 bank holidays, increasing with service.
* Family leave: 18 weeks full pay, 8 weeks half pay, 26 weeks statutory.
* Enhanced women’s health support, virtual GP, paid carer’s leave, training, career development, share schemes, and discounts.
