The Opportunity: Braintree District Council has both an opportunity for a permanent full-time Technical Officer to join our Environment team, and a 6-month fixed term contract role, which has potential for extension beyond the initial 6-months subject to business need. As a Technical Officer, you will be responsible for assisting in the provision of a comprehensive grants service and for providing technical assistance in assessing the suitability of applicant’s properties for disabled facility grants, in accordance with existing legislation and Council policies, procedures and targets. Job Accountabilities Oversee the delivery of Disabled Facility Grants and other Housing Grants, from referral to completion assisting the applicant through every stage of the process as necessary. Draft specifications and schedule of works, check tenders, verify details for benefit claims. Undertake site inspections and joint visits prior to application, advising the Occupational Therapist on practical options and implications around a solution. Liaise with builders, architect, occupational therapist and clients as necessary to ensure works are necessary, appropriate, reasonable and practical. Complete final inspection, detailing snagging, holding builders to account, and arranging payments as appropriate. Ensure that a record of all action taken is recorded on the Environmental Health IT systems. Carry out the work within a team of officers and cover the work of absent colleagues. Ensure that the Council and Directorate safety policies are observed. Carry out a programme of work as agreed with the Environmental Health Manager. Experience: We are preferably looking for an individual with experience in Local Authority disabled facilities grant-related work. However, if that experience is not held, then the role would benefit from proven experience of working in the building trade in either a practical, technical or professional capacity. The role entails drafting specifications and schedule of works, checking quotations and verifying details for benefit claims. With a good understanding and working knowledge of the technical aspects of building, you will also preferably possess a relevant construction related qualification such as City and Guilds, NVQ, BTEC, HNC or equivalent. Knowledge of Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, Housing Act 2004 and Environment Protection Act 1990 would be an advantage. Why choose Braintree District Council?
