About the role
We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support our research team in day-to-day activities, experimental support, and procurement of scientific materials. This role is ideal for someone with attention to detail, willing to work in a laboratory environment, and able to manage purchasing processes.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory & Research Support
* Assist with routine laboratory activities and sample preparation.
* Maintain laboratory equipment, perform basic calibration, and ensure compliance with safety procedures.
* Assist with ongoing laboratory activities.
* Support documentation of experimental results and maintenance of logs.
* Monitor stock levels of consumables, ensuring optimum inventory.
Purchasing & Procurement
* Assist in sourcing, comparing, and ordering laboratory supplies, reagents, consumables, and equipment.
* Liaise with approved vendors, negotiate pricing where appropriate, and track order progress.
* Manage purchase orders, delivery notes, invoices, and maintain accurate purchasing records.
* Work closely with finance and administration teams to ensure timely processing of procurement transactions.
* Maintain supplier relationships and identify potential new vendors.
Compliance & Safety
* Ensure adherence to health and safety guidelines, COSHH regulations, and internal quality systems.
* Assist with maintaining accurate records of chemical inventories and safety documentation.
* Participate in audits and contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes.
Essential Requirements
* Degree or equivalent qualification in a life science, chemistry, or related discipline.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
* Good understanding of laboratory consumables, chemicals, and equipment.
* Competent in purchasing workflows and interacting with suppliers.
* Competent in mathematical calculations related to laboratory testing and analysis
* Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
* Proven ability to work methodically within strict regulatory frameworks and safety standards
Desirable Skills
* Experience working in a laboratory environment (academic or industry).
* Experience with R&D operations or regulated laboratory environments.
* Understanding of GLP, GMP, or ISO standards.
* Familiarity with procurement software or inventory management systems.
* Ability to troubleshoot basic laboratory equipment issues.
* Understanding of FDA regulations relevant to laboratory operations is a plus
