Our team and opportunity

We are looking for a Craft Operative (Bricklayer and/or Stone Mason) to join our team.

As a Craft Operative we will play an important role improving, maintaining, and preserving our wonderful waterway network for customers by undertaking refurbishment or repair of canal infrastructure including locks, bridges, aqueducts, towpaths and associated equipment. Work will be carried out efficiently to defined safety, environmental and heritage standards at all times.

The post holder will work on an annualised hourly system that includes a rota, statutory holidays and weekends. Operatives will normally look after specific stretches of the regional waterways, but the team may be called upon to support work in other areas. Own transport and a valid UK driving licence are required.

Location & coverage

Reporting to the base in Lancaster, the role will be based around the Lancaster, Preston & Wigan areas and involve regular travel along the Northwest network. The Operative will report to the Lancaster site each day before receiving instructions for that day’s work and transport.

Occasionally the Operative may also be required to work in other parts of the North West Region.

About the role

As a Craft Operative you will maintain and preserve our waterway network, support Canal & River Trust’s aims to improve safety, protect the heritage and integrity of the inland waterway network, and work with specialist teams in a multi‑disciplinary environment to ensure our 200‑year‑old assets remain safe and enjoyable for generations to come.

Key responsibilities

* Work outside to carry out maintenance and repairs on waterway infrastructure, ensuring network availability is maximised.
* Use Bricklaying expertise to undertake manufacture and refurbishment within a timely manner, in accordance with defined standards and agreed programmes.
* Operate a variety of machinery, plant, tools and other equipment in accordance with Canal & River Trust’s safety standards and support in‑house maintenance when appropriate.
* Maintain general housekeeping of personal equipment, workshop equipment and workspace, ensuring all are maintained to defined standards.
* Respond promptly to customers’ queries and requirements, including emergency responses.
* Ensure all equipment (PPE, plant, materials, etc.) is appropriate for the task.
* Assist with the measurement of locks and lock gates to identify correct measurements for manufacture, working alongside an experienced team of specialists.
* Understand and interpret technical drawings to translate them into production.
* Work alongside and supervise volunteers, ensuring the Trust has sufficient resources to be sustainable and that volunteer satisfaction remains high.
* Operate regionally with the flexibility needed to deliver the nationally prioritised works programme, occasionally travelling further distances to undertake repair work.

About you

Operative skills are a minimum requirement. The ideal candidate will also bring a background in the building trade, with a generalist Bricklaying background where the process of building is second nature. You should be prepared to develop additional skills on the job and be comfortable working with a variety of tools and equipment.

Skills / Qualifications / Experience

* Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification (e.g. City & Guilds Level II, NVQ Level II).
* Experience handling plant/equipment in group A (e.g. chainsaw, hand power tools, forklift).
* Experience working within Bricklaying or a related discipline.
* Experience reading technical drawings.
* Full valid UK driving licence.
