Viral Hepatitis Clinical Nurse Specialist

This post provides specialised clinical leadership, management, coordination and support to the Viral Hepatology service at both Bedford Hospital and Luton and Dunstable University Hospital as part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHSFT.
The post holder will work as an autonomous Specialist Nurse within the Hepatology service specialising in Viral Hepatitis, providing expert and complex care, advice, clinical care, education and support for individuals and their carers through the nurse led clinics, a designated telephone support line and the training of nursing and medical staff.
The NHS in England has an ambition to reduce the levels of hepatitis C and hepatitis B transmission to improve public health outcomes, contributing to the WHO 2030 goals of the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat.
The post holder will work closely with the Regional Hub, Cambridge ODN (Operational Delivery Network) to ensure equitable access to specialised resources and treatments, cost‑effective use of resources within budgetary constraints, and hold the PTPPS monies while coordinating case finding in vulnerable and ethnic minority communities.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will carry continuing responsibility for the management of a defined caseload of both HCV and HBV patients, providing expert and complex care, advice, education and support for individuals and their carers through nurse led clinics and a designated telephone support line.
The post holder will provide teaching to nursing and medical staff.
The post holder will play a key role in the promotion of clinically effective, evidence‑based practice and clinical governance, delivering care which may include independent assessment, clinical decision making, reporting findings, and recommending further investigation and treatment.
The post holder will work closely with the Drug and Alcohol services across Bedfordshire to ensure clients receive care and expert advice for Hepatitis B and C, and will be responsible for inputting patients into the national data registry.
The Trust is now part of the NHSE ED opt‑out programme to identify anyone living with a BBV. The post holder will be responsible for providing a seamless pathway for patients who will require treatment and those who will require monitoring of Hepatitis B/C.
