Senior Radiotherapy Engineer

The Radiotherapy Engineering Group (REG) at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) in Newcastle is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Radiotherapy Engineer for a senior role. The successful applicant will work primarily on the Newcastle site and may be required to support the Carlisle site.
REG operates 11 linear accelerators, including nine Varian Truebeams, one Varian Edge, and various other radiotherapy equipment. Other equipment includes C Rad Catalyst SGRT, Brainlab Exactrac, Hypersight, Darpac SXT, Siemens goOpen Pro CT scanners, Siemens Confidence RT Pro CT scanner, and Siemens Sola MR scanners.

Main Duties of the Job
Radiotherapy engineers ensure safe, reliable delivery of radiotherapy by providing expert electromechanical maintenance and support for complex clinical treatment systems. They work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
Key responsibilities include:
Maintenance of Radiotherapy and Ancillary Equipment
* Carrying out planned preventative maintenance on treatment machines.
* Performing accurate fault diagnosis and delivering effective repairs.
* Monitoring equipment reliability and identifying performance trends.
Quality Control of Radiotherapy Systems
* Working within an established Quality Management System.
* Undertaking equipment quality control checks to ensure safe operation.
* Supporting the delivery and continual improvement of the Radiotherapy Engineering Service.
Qualifications and Experience
* Hold a master's-level qualification or have equivalent relevant experience in an appropriate discipline.
* Have completed a recognised engineering or technical apprenticeship or training programme.
* Possess demonstrable experience in radiotherapy engineering, particularly with Varian equipment.
The Radiotherapy Engineering team comprises 12 engineers dedicated to maintaining a high‑quality service.
Training is provided as required. We work a three‑week rotating shift pattern including one weekend per rotation.
Job responsibilities
* Contribute to the delivery of the technological components of the radiotherapy service and assist in maintaining and developing high standards.
* Provide professional technological leadership within designated areas of expertise.
* Contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of clinical and organisational strategies.
* Participate in service improvement and staff development activities.
* Take responsibility for specialist project areas as required.
* Contribute to the engineering rota covering a 7‑day service.
REG engineers ensure radiotherapy treatment machines operate safely and effectively, performing both planned and unplanned maintenance and providing essential technical input to the multidisciplinary radiotherapy team.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* Recognised degree in relevant subject or equivalent experience.
* Appropriate postgraduate degree at master's level or equivalent specialist knowledge.
* Registration on the RCT or AHCS PTP register.
Knowledge & Experience
* Specialist training and practical experience on linear accelerators, CT scanners, and other radiotherapy equipment.
* Extensive practical experience in radiation equipment servicing, workshop practices, and techniques.
* Specialist knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, electro‑mechanical and computer systems.
* Good knowledge of IT software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience applying them.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional guidelines, and safety practices (ISO 9001, BSI standards, COSHH).
* Broad knowledge of the radiotherapy field and radiation protection considerations.
* Completion of relevant manufacturer‑certified training.
