Due to the secure nature of the programme you will need to either hold or be willing and eligible to undergo UK Security Clearance. This is a hybrid position.
Your future duties and responsibilities
In this role you will design, build and enhance Spring‑based microservices that drive event‑based decisioning across the Home Office ecosystem. You will develop and optimise rule‑based logic using Drools ensuring HOMBRE continues to deliver accurate, enriched and prioritised event outputs. Your work will directly contribute to the performance, reliability and value of a national‑scale platform.
You will collaborate closely with engineers, architects and product teams, taking ownership of your services, contributing creative solutions and benefitting from a supportive team culture. At more senior levels you will guide colleagues, share expertise and influence engineering practices across the project.
Key responsibilities include
* Develop & Deliver: Build Java/Spring Boot microservices and RESTful APIs
* Design & Optimise: Implement and refine rule‑based logic using Drools syntax
* Test & Assure Quality: Create robust unit and integration tests using JUnit and Mockito
* Collaborate & Improve: Contribute to Agile delivery pipelines and CI/CD workflows
* Support & Mentor: Provide guidance to junior developers where applicable
* Enhance & Innovate: Shape engineering approaches and improve system performance
Required qualifications to be successful in this role
You should bring strong Java engineering experience, sound understanding of API‑driven services and confidence working in modern Agile environments. Experience with rule engines, cloud technologies or front‑end frameworks is beneficial but not essential.
