An exciting opportunity has become available for an Emergency & Critical Care Veterinary Surgeon to join a well-equipped 24-hour small animal hospital based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
This role offers the chance to work within a dedicated out-of-hours emergency team, managing a varied and rewarding ECC caseload while benefiting from a highly supportive clinical environment and access to advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment.
About the Hospital
The hospital provides round-the-clock veterinary care, offering both first-opinion and emergency services to the local community and surrounding practices.
The facility is fully equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical technology, allowing the team to manage a wide range of emergency and critical care cases on-site.
Equipment and facilities include:
1. ProCyte haematology analyser
2. Catalyst Dx biochemistry analyser
3. EPOC blood gas analyser
4. Coagulation testing (APTT/PT)
5. Comprehensive in-house infectious disease testing
6. Transfusion medicine capabilities
7. Digital radiography
8. Advanced ultrasound with Doppler
9. Flexible video gastroscope and bronchoscope
10. Video otoscope and rigid endoscopy
11. Dental radiography
12. Multiparameter monitoring equipment (ECG, capnography, temperature, SpO₂, blood pressure)
13. Doppler blood pressure monitoring
14. Advanced surgical equipment including vessel sealing and electrosurgical systems
15. Sterilisation facilities
16. Additional advanced imaging such as CT scanning is available via referral for follow-up investigations.
The Team
You will be part of a dedicated out-of-hours clinical team, working alongside:
17. An experienced Out-of-Hours Registered Veterinary Nurse
18. An Out-of-Hours Veterinary Care Assistant
19. Evening reception support until late evening
20. Additional twilight RVN support during the early part of the night shift
The wider hospital team also includes experienced clinicians with surgery, medicine and dentistry certificates, providing valuable clinical support and case discussion opportunities.
The Role
This position focuses on emergency and critical care, providing veterinary treatment for urgent and complex cases overnight.
The hospital manages a diverse ECC caseload including:
21. Emergency surgical procedures such as caesarean sections, pyometra surgeries, exploratory laparotomies, enterotomies and enterectomies
22. Critical medical cases including Addisonian crises, diabetic ketoacidosis, and severe pancreatitis
23. Trauma, toxin ingestion, and acute medical presentations
The night team is also involved in performing and managing a range of advanced emergency procedures including:
24. Oesophageal feeding tube placement
25. Seldinger chest drain placement
26. Abdominal peritoneal drains
27. Pigtail urinary catheter placement
28. TFAST and AFAST ultrasound assessment
29. Endoscopy procedures
30. Negative pressure wound therapy
31. Urinary catheterisation
Support and training are available to help develop confidence in these advanced ECC techniques.
Working Pattern
32. 7 nights on / 14 nights off rota
33. 8:00pm 8:00am shifts
34. Dedicated OOH emergency role
35. Opportunity to undertake locum work elsewhere during off weeks if desired
This rota provides excellent worklife balance with extended time off between working weeks.
Candidate Requirements
The ideal candidate will:
36. Hold a BVSc or equivalent veterinary degree recognised in the UK
37. Be RCVS registered (or eligible)
38. Have experience working within small animal practice or emergency care
39. Be confident managing emergency and critical care cases
40. Demonstrate strong clinical decision-making and teamwork skills
41. Have an interest in ECC medicine and advanced clinical procedures
Salary & Benefits
42. Salary circa £60,000
43. £1,500 annual CPD allowance
