Offer description

A Yorkshire based engineering Consultancy is leading a confidential search for an experienced and strategically minded Technical Director in Railway Engineering to advance the technical excellence and commercial growth of its rail infrastructure capability. This senior appointment is ideal for an established technical leader or an ambitious Associate Director ready to take the next step into a defining leadership position with strong organisational support for career progression. The successful individual will provide overarching technical leadership and governance across complex railway engineering projects, ensuring delivery quality, compliance with industry standards, and alignment with client expectations. This role involves acting as a senior technical authority, guiding multidisciplinary teams, reviewing engineering designs, managing technical risk, and supporting project delivery from early concept through to completion. The post-holder will also support business development activities, contribute to bids and proposals, and build trusted relationships with clients and delivery partners. A key aspect of the role is mentoring and developing emerging talent, fostering a culture of technical excellence and knowledge sharing. The Technical Director will work closely with leadership peers to strengthen capability, improve internal processes, and embed best practice across the rail discipline. The position is based in Leeds, supported by flexible hybrid working arrangements that recognise the importance of professional autonomy and work-life balance. The consultancy's culture emphasises collaboration, wellbeing, and continuous development, offering an environment where senior professionals can lead with influence and creativity rather than process constraint. To support career growth, employees benefit from a robust training and development programme, including structured leadership development pathways, technical upskilling modules, and funding towards chartership and advanced professional qualifications. Senior engineers have access to mentoring, coaching, and tailored development plans designed to accelerate progression to Director-level and beyond. The Consultancy's benefits package is competitive and reflective of the seniority of the role, typically including an attractive salary that rewards experience and impact, generous pension contributions, enhanced paid leave allowances, private healthcare, life assurance, and access to wellbeing support services. Other benefits include flexible working options, professional membership subscriptions, and participation in company-wide events and development forums. Candidates will hold a degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering and/or Structural Engineering and be professionally recognised by a relevant institution. Substantial experience in railway engineering within consultancy or contracting environments is required, with a strong working knowledge of Network Rail standards, CDM regulations, and British/EU design codes. Proven experience in responsible engineering roles, including eligibility for appointment as Contractor's Responsible Engineer (Designer), is highly desirable. This opportunity is particularly attractive to Associate Directors or Principal Engineers who are already performing at a senior technical level and are seeking a clear, supported pathway into a fully autonomous Technical Director role. The Consultancy welcomes applications from candidates who demonstrate a blend of technical credibility, leadership capability, commercial awareness, and a commitment to developing others. In return, the role offers long-term career security, strategic influence, and the opportunity to shape both people and projects within a respected rail engineering practice. This appointment represents a compelling proposition for senior railway engineers looking for a highly supportive environment in which to lead, grow, and make a lasting impact.
