Job overviewThis is an opportunity to do one of the first Day case anaesthetic fellowships focused on BADS criteria for day case surgery, offered nationally. The Fellowship is aimed at trainees or Doctors who wish to excel in Day case work and are in possession of the primary FRCA (or equivalent) with minimum anesthetic experience of 4 years or even senior trainees, CCT holders seeking further experience in Day case role, leadership and management skills within the NHS would be eligible to apply.The post is for 12 months commencing in Feb 2026. Candidates must have previous experience of working as an anaesthetist in UK in addition to hold full GMC registration.Main duties of the jobThe exact timetable will be tailored to comply with the Fellows specific interests.

The proportion of clinical daytime work will be finalised based on the skill mix and upon needs of the service upon appointment. The Fellow will take part in the junior on call rota, providing on call for the intensive care unit, theatres or obstetrics as required by the department.Post Graduate Doctors in Training are also eligible to apply. Trainees should be on course for a standard ARCP outcome and discuss an Out Of Programme (OOP) pause with their TPD.

An OOP (P) would allow competencies achieved to be evaluated at ARCP on return to programme using a gap analysis tool and potentially counted towards training. Mentorship will be available all throughout with the aim to develop to deliver theatre sessions independently under Consultant supervision.Clinical duties will include participation in an on call rota (obstetrics, ICU or theatre) on a 1:8 resident basis (maximum shift duration of 12.5hrs).Non-Clinical• Establish an understanding of Trust structure, roles and responsibilities of how to deliver the Day case list under direct supervision, attending key VAR (Virtual Anaesthetic Review meeting), Theatre Management Group and Theatre productivity Board meeting to understand the effectiveness and efficiency of the EMPCC.• Plan to attend BADS meeting, develop innovative ideas to improve efficiency and care, develop management and leadership skills within 6 months of Fellowship• Gain knowledge of the principles of GIRFT to improve patient care efficiently by self-directed learning, accessing reading materials and webinars available on the Future NHS website.• Understand how shared learning is being utilised by the NHS to implement changes rapidly and efficiently in clinical practice.• Appreciate the power of data to do Audits and drive changes within healthcare including the implications of coding and data validation by clinicians.• Show awareness of some of the national data reporting systems for anaesthetic and surgical specialities to develop evidence based practice.SupervisionThe fellow will be assigned a clinical supervisor who will oversee work during their clinical duties.Dr Kaushik / Dr Kukreja / Dr Khandia will supervise this fellowship.

They will ensure the fellow is provided with adequate education and management opportunities and achieve satisfactory progression through the programme. Postholders will work with the supervisor to set objectives and agree on a personal development plan and may rotate between all 3 sites LGH, LRI and GGH to learn Day case work in other specialities.Person specificationTraining & QualificationsEssential criteria- Full GMC registration / Final FRCA or equivalent Primary Medical Degree (MBChB, MBBS or equivalent)- Min 4 years of Anaesthetic experience /- Previous experience of working as an anaesthetist in the UKManagementEssential criteria- Understanding of the NHS, its strategy and current issues / Interest in leadership and management- Basic understanding of management theory Information technology skills / Presentation skillsDesirable criteria- Participation in leadership and management course- Presentation of QI/service improvement at regional/national conferenceResearch & Audit and TeachingEssential criteria- Experience of audit and Understanding of Audit principles Evidence of personal experience of audit.- Experience of teaching undergraduates/postgraduates and related professionalsDesirable criteria- Medical publications or a background of research activity- Higher research degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) GCP certification- Higher qualifications in Medical EducationAdditional InformationPlease submit your application form without delay to avoid disappointment; we will close vacancies prior to the publishing closing date if we receive a sufficient number of completed application forms.
