Hatred Monitoring Centre (HMC) in a nutshell
: We stand up against hatred and all forms of racism, bigotry, intolerance, and prejudice. Hatred Monitoring Centre aims to regularly monitor and track online (offline) hatred campaigns ― disinformation/misinformation, learn how to anticipate violence associated with these campaigns and challenge its propagation.
To achieve this mission, HMC tries to understand and compare online debates across different socio-political contexts. HMC is looking for dedicated volunteers who will work on a project that aims to track, record, and create datasets of inflammatory language associated with "migrant hotels" and "Unite the Kingdom Rally" in the United Kingdom, monitor hate speech in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia, and any other context that can emerge in the near future. The project is part of HMC's efforts to understand how social media platforms are used to collectively blame minorities. Our efforts also intend to cover primarily ethnic and linguistic minorities, including but not limited to migrants and Roma in the UK, the Banyamulenge, Tigrayans Hazaras, Rohingyas…
The objective of this exercise is to compare inflammatory language used in the UK, DRC, Ethiopia and other parts of the world, including Myanmar, Afhganistan... The analysis and comparison will help HMC understand online prejudice based on this broad spectrum. The tasks of social media data collection volunteers will involve:
* Monitoring and recording inflammatory language and online campaigns associated with "migrant hotels" and "Unite Kingdom Rally", ongoing violence and wars in DRC and Ethiopia.
* Document and track inflammatory language, misinformation and disinformation messages, over time trends and patterns across social media platforms and online forums.
* Assess contents to find emerging themes and concepts.
* Analyse trends and consistency of arguments that counter such misinformation.
* Assist in laying the foundations of creating databases for future research and advocacy. Whenever needed, volunteers can help in setting up mechanisms to flag up harmful content that requires urgent action.
* Advise on how the information gathered can best be used for an inclusive society.
* Administrative and Research Support:
Conduct preliminary assessment of data collected and undertake basic research to determine organisations and stakeholders who may be interested with the findings.
* Social Media and Content Creation
:
Support HMC's online presence by creating blog posts, graphics... based on the preliminary assessment of data collected.
* Any other relevant tasks aimed at promoting HMC's mission and objectives.
