1) Exercise of general professional duties
A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
* (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
* (b) if employed by a board on terms under which they are not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where they may be required to work.
2) Exercise of particular duties
Teachers shall perform, in accordance with reasonable directions, such duties as may be assigned, including:
* (a) duties assigned by the principal for teachers employed in a school;
* (b) duties assigned by the board or principal of any school where they are required to work, for teachers employed under paragraph 1(b).
Responsibilities
1. Planning
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
* Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
* Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ development, progress, and attainment.

* Promoting the progress and well-being of pupils;
* Providing advice and guidance on educational, social matters, and future careers;
* Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs;
* Communicating with parents and outside bodies;
* Participating in meetings related to these areas.
2. Assessment/Reporting
Providing assessments, reports, and references on pupils, ensuring confidentiality where appropriate.
3. Staff Development/Professional Development
* Participating in staff development schemes;
* Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes;
* Contributing to course and teaching material development.
4. Discipline/Health and Safety
* Maintaining good order and discipline;
* Safeguarding pupils’ health and safety;
* Participating in curriculum and pastoral meetings.
5. Public Examinations
Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, recording, and supervising during exams.
6. Management and Administration
* Contributing to staff recruitment and development;
* Managing or coordinating other teachers’ work;
* Participating in curriculum, organisation, and pastoral activities;
* Handling administrative tasks, including support staff supervision and resource management.
7. Working Hours
* Available for 195 days annually, with specific hours and duties as specified;
* Teaching hours and breaks are regulated, with specific provisions for nursery and primary teachers.
8. Staff Cover
Supervising pupils in the absence of their teachers, subject to school size and policy.

* Qualifications: Recognized teaching qualification for Northern Ireland.
* Experience: At least 2 years of teaching at Key Stage 1 or 2, supporting diverse learners including those with SEN, and familiarity with SEN Code of Practice.
* Registration: Registered with GTCNI before starting.
Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria
* Knowledge of NI Curriculum, safeguarding, SEN policies, teaching strategies, digital tools, and assessment methods.
* Proven teaching and classroom management skills, ability to work collaboratively, and reflect school values.
Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
* Additional experience, curriculum coordination, SEN support, or preparing for transfer tests.
