Clerk of Works – Highways & Traffic
Based in London
Length: 3 months initially
IR35 status: Inside
We are seeking an experienced Clerk of Works to support the delivery of the Council’s Capital Projects Programme. This is a site-based role overseeing highways, traffic management, and public realm schemes across the borough, including cycle infrastructure projects delivered in partnership with Transport for London.
Key Responsibilities:
* Inspect and supervise highways and traffic works, including carriageways, footways, cycle lanes, and traffic management schemes
* Monitor contractor performance to ensure compliance with specifications, standards, and legislation
* Carry out regular site inspections, ensuring quality, safety, and environmental standards are met
* Enforce health and safety requirements and ensure safe working practices on live highway sites
* Oversee traffic management arrangements, signage, and road markings
* Maintain detailed site records, including inspections, reports, and photographic evidence
* Monitor project progress, identifying risks, delays, or cost issues and reporting to Project Engineers
* Liaise with contractors, developers, internal teams, and external stakeholders
* Assist with change control, issue resolution, and contractor performance management
Skills, experience and knowledge required:
* Recent experience as a Finance Manager in a local government Environment, Communities, or Place finance team
* Strong team management and leadership skills
* Advanced Excel and financial modelling ability
* A CCAB accountancy qualification, or part qualified and actively studying for such a qualification
Important Information:
* This role is highways-focused. Candidates with only building or vertical construction (housing/commercial) experience will not be considered
* Regular site attendance across the borough is required
