Job overview

This is an essential role for Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, supporting Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit status and the delivery of care for patients with haematological conditions. The post holder will provide specialist knowledge and support to patients and families receiving care from the paediatric oncology and haematology services, ensuring that the recommendations of the NICE guidance Improving Outcomes in Children and Young People with Cancer are met across both acute and community services. This role will work in close collaboration with the Luton and Dunstable multidisciplinary team, with links to the Bedford Hospital site.

Main duties of the job

1. To act as the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Bedford site, working in collaboration with the Luton and Dunstable multidisciplinary team to support the provision of a Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit and ensure the highest standards of care are delivered. The post holder will influence and implement new ways of working through network collaboration, the National Service Framework, NICE guidance, and Improving Outcomes objectives.
2. To coordinate the care of acutely unwell children and young people experiencing oncological or haematological emergencies, or requiring agreed levels of supportive care, in line with shared care unit agreements and tertiary haematology services.
3. To develop and deliver training interventions, targeted education programmes, and other learning initiatives to support the embedding of new practices and service developments.
4. To provide active support to clinicians, practitioners, and managers in the delivery of Quality and Health Care Governance within the directorate, ensuring alignment with the wider Trust and Primary Care Trust governance frameworks. This will include participation in governance forums and cancer networks.
5. To coordinate the care of children and young people with haematological conditions requiring symptom management and treatment, as outlined in the haematology Service Level Agreement.
6. To work collaboratively with clinical teams to influence and drive service improvement.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

13. •RSCN (NMC)
14. •Phlebotomy/CVAD competent
15. •Paediatric Oncology Course
16. •Chemo competency
17. •Evidence of recent Band 6 general ward acute experience

Desirable criteria

18. •EPALS (current)
19. •ENB 998/MSPP or equivalent teaching Qualification
20. •Paediatric HDU course or Equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

21. •Experience of caring for children with Haematology/Oncology related conditions, currently working at Band 6 level
22. •Demonstrable autonomous decision making

Desirable criteria

23. •HDU nursing experience
24. •Experience of guideline writing, appraisal and development

Knowledge

Essential criteria

25. •Able to use IT systems including Microsoft Office.
26. •NHS IT systems
27. •Understanding of current national developments and guidance in Oncology/Haematology

Desirable criteria

28. •Advanced communication skills
