Role Overview
We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our Transparencies team in Luton to support new and existing programmes including Fast jet canopies, Helicopter Windscreens and Flight Deck Windows. The role involves creating and maintaining product definition and ensuring ongoing product performance against requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop design solutions compliant with customer, regulatory and airworthiness requirements within allocated programme budgets and timelines.
* Create and maintain design definition documents, drawings, specifications and reports detailing dimensions, materials, manufacturing process requirements and tolerances.
* Understand and support the qualification process, preparing compliance documentation for internal, customer and regulatory requirements.
* Represent Design Engineering in Integrated Program Teams (IPT) and Material Review Boards (MRB), identifying and resolving product non‑compliances.
* Provide technical support to address non‑conforming products, creating permits, concessions, rework schemes and related documents.
* Support internal and external technical reviews, including preparation of technical data and presentations for formal gate reviews.
* Contribute to continuous improvement of products, processes, tools and design handbooks, ensuring quality and compliance with evolving customer, regulatory and airworthiness requirements.
* Assist with engineering change management, MRB, customer concession management and manufacturing problem solving as part of the Integrated Programme Team.
* Adhere to EHS policy and processes, contributing to a proactive EHS culture within the wider team.
* Engage in team activities, surveys and personal development planning in line with GKN’s principles of safety, innovation, openness, care, respect and ownership.
* Actively participate in UK National Security Vetting (UKNSV) Security Clearance (SC) requirements as part of the role.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical or any relevant Engineering field.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to produce clear, concise and accurate technical content.
* Logical, methodical approach to task planning and evidence‑based decision making.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Working knowledge of MS Office suite.
Preferred Experience
* Previous experience in the aerospace sector.
* Experience in configuration control and change management.
* Awareness of aerospace certification requirements.
* Experience using CATIA V5 or similar CAD software.
* Experience using SAP.
