Job overview

HEAD OF DRAMA (maternity cover)

MPR/UPR + TLR 2b (£5,872)

For January 2026 (for up to 12 months)

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen at Robert May's School for a Head of Drama (maternity cover). This post would suit either a current head of department or an ambitious and dynamic Teacher of Drama.

We are seeking a colleague who has the drive and ambition to further develop the Drama department and deliver outstanding attainment, progress and outcomes for our students. You will be leading a highly successful and forward-thinking department in this large and growing secondary school, teaching across the age and attainment range at both Key Stage 3 and 4 in an environment where students are well behaved and keen to do well.

Our Drama department makes a significant contribution to the life of the school and puts on a musical production each year with the Music department with over 150 students taking part. You will be joining a supportive team in a growing school, teaching across the age and attainment range at both Key Stage 3 and 4 in an environment where students are well behaved and keen to do well.

At RMS, we are looking for a middle leader who:

* Has excellent subject knowledge and strong teaching skills
* Has the ability to motivate and support a team
* Is able to build positive relationships with all learners and is committed to raising attainment of all students
* Is willing to commit to extracurricular activities that add value to the school and local community

In return, we can offer:

* Excellent support from an experienced, committed and welcoming subject specialist team and fantastic opportunities for continued professional development: we have a comprehensive CPD programme for teachers at all career stages including preparation for middle and senior leadership.
* Fantastic students who are well behaved and who want to learn and supportive families who value education. Consistently excellent student attainment and progress.
* Continual collaboration and sharing of resources to reduce workload and improve provision for students. PDL (also known as PSHE) is delivered by a specialist team leaving tutors to focus on character and pastoral development.
* Effective systems and processes to support teacher workload and wellbeing such as centralised detentions, streamlined reporting and assessment systems and online parents' evenings. Very effective systems and resources are in place to support learning and manage behaviour in the classroom.
* Excellent facilities and resources: all teaching staff are provided with a high spec laptop and touch screens in classrooms. Digital learning is fully embedded using a Google platform in Years 7, 8 and 9 and is being rolled out to all years with laptops for students. Significant investment has been made in facilities including recent upgrades to lighting, heating and windows and all subject areas have their own office and facilities.
* A wellbeing day per academic year and an active Staff Wellbeing Committee with numerous enrichment activities on offer.
* A full programme of trips and visits, giving you the chance to share in making positive memories with students.
* Access to an Employee Assistance Programme.
* All requests for flexible working will be considered.

We pride ourselves on our ethos and culture which promotes positive relationships and behaviour. In our most recent Ofsted report (Nov 2022), inspectors observed that '"Lessons are calm and purposeful and led by knowledgeable, passionate teachers. Pupils show dedication to learning and pay close attention to their teacher's instruction"'.

Robert May's School, which dates from 1694, is a high attaining and oversubscribed 11-16 Academy school with a distinctive ethos based on the charitable principles of our founder. We would welcome the opportunity for an informal discussion or visit. Please contact Lisa Shackleton, HR Manager on or for further information or to arrange a visit.

Please note that the school reserves the right to interview on receipt of applications, and to appoint prior to the deadline, so early application is recommended.

An online search will be conducted for all shortlisted candidates to identify any past or current incidents or issues that might affect your suitability to work with children and undertake this role. This is in line with guidance in Keeping Children Safe in Education.

Vision and values

In 1694, Robert May, a local merchant, donated money for the purpose of educating twenty-five boys to be taught at the school. This act of philanthropy set in motion a school which has had a long and vibrant journey to become the high-achieving comprehensive it is today. At Robert May's School we are proud of our ethos, which is characterised by an unfailing belief that all students can succeed in their chosen paths and that each person in the learning community is capable of achieving excellence every day in whatever they do. Our aim is to continue the work of our Founder, to strengthen his legacy and to be both the anchor and kite for the community we serve.

We believe that academic success is fundamental and it is our job as a school to ensure that students gain the knowledge and skills they need to achieve the very best outcomes they can. Great GCSE results open doors but education is about more than just what happens in the classroom. We recognise the importance of character and want to ensure that our young people leave us confident and capable, having achieved the best they can within and beyond the classroom, poised for success and ready to make a difference to the lives of those around them.

All who are connected to Robert May's are part of the Robert May's community. Being a part of the Robert May's community means you are part of something special and this is underpinned by 'The Robert May's Way': Respect, Motivate, Support.
