Local Authority Policy Planning Officer, Greater Manchester
Pay rate £45 - 55 per hour
Contract role, Local Government Planning
We are recruiting for an experienced Policy Planning Officer in the Greater Manchester area.
Purpose of the Role:
To provide specialist planning policy advice and support the delivery of the Council’s statutory planning functions, including preparation and monitoring of the Local Plan and associated policy documents. The role will ensure compliance with national and local planning legislation and contribute to strategic planning objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Contribute to the preparation, monitoring and review of the Council’s planning policies, ensuring statutory requirements are met.
2. Provide professional advice on planning policy matters to colleagues, elected members, developers, and the public.
3. Represent the Council’s spatial planning interests in statutory plan-making processes, including at Examination in Public.
4. Monitor and interpret changes in planning legislation, regulations, and guidance at national and regional levels.
5. Support Development Management by providing policy input on major planning applications and pre-application discussions.
6. Project support for the Local Plan.
7. Prepare reports, briefing notes, and responses to consultations on planning policy issues.
Essential Requirements:
8. Experience: Minimum 6–8 years in planning policy within a local authority or consultancy environment.
9. Knowledge: Strong understanding of UK planning legislation, policy frameworks, and Local Plan processes.
Skills:
10. Ability to analyse complex planning issues and provide clear, evidence-based advice.
11. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
12. Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
Desirable:
13. Experience of Green Belt and open space policy issues.
14. Familiarity with Examination in Public procedures.
15. Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
