Location: HMP Chelmsford, 200 Springfield Road, Chelmsford CM2 6LQ
Salary: £38,333.37 per annum
Contract: Full-time / Permanent
Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Engineer – Mech/Steam/HTHW to join our team at HMP Chelmsford, a Category B & adult/male Prison. You will work within a self‑contained facility operating 24/7, supporting a multidisciplinary team of plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, and more to ensure a safe and secure environment.
Responsibilities (Key duties)
As an Engineer – Mech/Steam/HTHW, you will:
- Operate and maintain steam boiler and heating systems;
- Ensure compliance with Water Supply Regulation and Control of Legionella L8;
- Implement safe operation of boilers (BG01);
- Work on commercial or industrial steam and heating networks;
- Provide technical support to the Facilities Maintenance Team;
- Contribute to continual improvement of safety and operational standards.
Qualifications
 * Two years' experience operating a steam boiler or similar role.
 * Familiarity with Water Supply Regulation and Control of Legionella L8 requirements.
 * Familiarity with BG01 – safe operation of boilers.
 * Experience working on commercial or industrial steam, heating, and water systems.
 * Plumber qualified to C&G 6035 (Plumbing), C&G 6189 (Plumbing and heating) and NVQ level 3 in Plumbing or equivalent.
 * BOAS accredited boiler operator course or equivalent.
 * Good Health & Safety knowledge.
 * Excellent organisational, time‑management and people skills.
