Job overview

We are looking for dynamic forward thinking cardiothoracic anaesthetists to join us and continue the development of the service. You will join a friendly, committed team to provide anaesthesia and critical care for approximately 1000 cardiac and 700 thoracic cases per year.

Main duties of the job

Our varied caseload includes minimally invasive aortic and mitral surgery, major aortic work, an established TAVI programme, VAT lobectomies, thymectomies and robotic thoracic surgery. A robotic mitral surgery programme is in the planning stages.

Maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care.
Clinical/on-call responsibilities
To provide clinical services in Cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care in accordance with clinical and legal requirements and undertake any responsibility which relates to the agreed special interests.
The clinical role will be divided up into anaesthesia for cardiac and thoracic theatres, the catheter laboratory, pre-assessment in both ward and clinic environments and critical care on the cardiothoracic critical care unit.
To take part in the consultant on-call rota for nights and weekends.
Cover for periods of colleague absence due to annual leave and other authorised undertakings
Provide professional supervision and management of trainees, clinical fellows and advanced critical care practitioners (ACCPs).
Be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at Audit, Governance, Consultant/Directorate and Centre meetings.
Take part in annual appraisal, revalidation and job plans as conducted by the clinical director.
Active involvement in audit and service improvement projects.

Active participation in the teaching of trainee doctors, ACCPs and undergraduates.

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential criteria

1. Full registration with the GMC with licence to practise
2. FRCA or equivalent Diploma
3. CCT (or equivalent)) with entry on Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or within six months of anticipated CCT date on the date of interview. (Equivalence must be confirmed with GMC by date of interview).
4. Minimum of 7 years experience in anaesthesia
5. Evidence of compliance with standards of Good Medical Practice

Desirable criteria

6. Qualification (European, British or American) in Transoesophageal echo (TOE)
7. Accreditation or Qualification in Critical Care Medicine
8. Accreditation or Qualification in Critical Care Ultrasound
9. Post-Graduate Prizes

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Essential criteria

10. Minimum of 12 months recent advanced experience in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care at advanced trainee, post-CCT, fellow or Consultant level at the time of appointment.
11. ALS and CALS provider

Desirable criteria

12. Experience of anaesthesia for minimally invasive cardiac surgery, major aortic surgery and robotic thoracic surgery
13. Experience of working in an NHS Hospital
