Freelance Technical SEO Specialist


About CLD

CLD is a digital agency providing website design and development, SEO/AEO and PPC services to a portfolio of UK clients. We have a small, collaborative in-house team and an existing SEO function. We are looking for a freelance technical SEO specialist to plug a specific gap in our capabilities.


The role

A technical SEO specialist who acts as the technical backbone for our existing SEO team — keeping six client sites algorithmically healthy and Search Console clean, while our in-house team handles content, digital PR, web development and account management.


The team you'll be working with

* Account handler. Owns the client relationship and monthly client calls.
* Junior SEO. Handles on-page work, keyword research and day-to-day execution.
* In-house digital PR specialist. Owns link building, outreach and brand mentions.
* In-house web developer for Craft CMS.
* Designer and Webflow developer
* Technical SEO. The missing piece. Collaborative role, not a lead role.


Scope of work

* Search Console hygiene — Keep all six properties clean. Monitor coverage, indexation, Core Web Vitals, mobile usability and manual actions on a regular cadence.
* Algorithm monitoring — Stay on top of Google updates and proactively flag risks and opportunities to the team before clients notice ranking drops.
* Redirect management — Audit existing redirects, manage new ones during site changes, prevent chains, handle 404s. Across all three CMS platforms.
* Page-level diagnostics — Run the technical investigation: indexation, internal linking, crawl depth, schema, page speed, content gaps, backlink audits, SERP intent mismatch. Then brief Abbi or Anna for execution.
* Technical audits — Monthly or quarterly per client, surfaced into monthly client calls via Helen.
* Collaboration — Brief Abbi on on-page fixes, brief Anna where technical issues affect link equity, and work with our dev side on CMS-level fixes.


Not in scope

* PPC — we have this covered separately.
* Client relationship management — Helen owns this.
* Content writing or digital PR — Abbi and Anna own this.
* Strategy from scratch — you'll be supporting an existing strategy, not rebuilding one.


Engagement model

Each client has an agreed number of monthly retainer hours. The freelancer needs to work within those budgets and be comfortable splitting time across multiple clients. We can discuss day rate, hourly or fixed monthly retainer arrangements at the interview.


What we're looking for

* Demonstrable technical SEO experience across WordPress, Craft CMS and Webflow (or strong willingness to learn the one you don't know).
* Comfortable owning Search Console hygiene across multiple properties.
* Confident communicator who can translate technical issues for non-technical account handlers and clients.
* Collaborative — happy to brief and work alongside a junior SEO and a digital PR specialist.
* Up-to-date on Google algorithm updates and the SEO industry generally.
