Deputy Head of School – Sustainable Construction & Building Services

Location: Liverpool

Compensation: £50,379 / year

The Deputy Head of School for Sustainable Construction and Building Services will support and deputise for the Head of School to ensure the successful running of the curriculum area, providing local leadership of teaching, learning and assessment and supporting the development and effective implementation of the school’s curriculum offer. The growing school delivers its curriculum across two different campuses, and this role will also support the Head of School in leading a consistent, outstanding culture across both sites.

The Deputy Head of School will work with the Curriculum Team, Progress Leaders, Senior Progress Leaders and Assistant Heads of School, to ensure high levels of student achievement and sustainable progression. As this role also includes teaching responsibilities, you will lead by example in achieving excellence in teaching and learning through your own innovative and excellent professional practice. The Deputy Head of School will work with the Head of School, as well as partner employers to develop and promote the curriculum in innovative directions and will play a key role in the establishment of the Construction Academy at Liverpool Waters.


Key Responsibilities

* Deputise regularly for the Head of School.
* Work with the Head of School, Assistant Heads of School, and curriculum team to develop and implement a curriculum offer that leads to sustainable destinations for all students.
* Support the Head of School in designing programmes and teaching approaches that enable the curriculum area to achieve the highest standards and value-added.
* Develop and implement a range of commercial and business opportunities for the curriculum area.
* Undertake line management and appraisal of staff within the school.
* Support the continuous improvement of teaching, learning and assessment within the school, providing developmental observations for teaching staff and appropriate coaching and mentoring support.
* Ensure students’ programmes are individually tailored to progress to further learning or employment, including development of enterprise and employability skills.
* Assist with the development of the school’s self‑assessment and quality improvement plans.
* Work with the Head of Work‑Based Learning to ensure the effective delivery of off‑the‑job learning in apprenticeships.
* Promote the College to existing partners and new employers and explore opportunities for innovation and new delivery.
* Keep knowledge and skills up‑to‑date with national developments in the curriculum area.


Teaching and Learning

* Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality lessons.
* Use effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques to engage and motivate students and encourage independence and autonomy.
* Establish a purposeful and motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued.
* Set and mark work and track all students’ progress and attendance in accordance with College systems and policies.
* Work with colleagues with relevant expertise to address additional student English and Maths skills development in subject area.
* Communicate and consult with parents, carers and students including Parent’s Evening, Welcome Evenings, events and open evenings.


Generic Duties

* Contribute to the mission and values statement of the College Group and its effective implementation.
* Contribute to the College and curriculum area strategic objectives and engage in the annual review.
* Take proactive responsibility for Health & Safety, ensuring a safe working environment and practices.
* Comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
* Support cross-college activities such as enrolment and invigilation periods.
* Review own professional development needs and participate fully in future training.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise


Essential

* Educated to degree level and/or significant professional experience.
* A recognised teaching qualification.
* Experience of leading and managing teams.
* Successful teaching experience.
* Excellent computer literacy – ability to use current IT programmes of the College.
* Experience of leading internal quality assurance.
* Proven relevant experience of curriculum design, development & delivery.
* Detailed knowledge and understanding of the curriculum area.
* Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development.
* Minimum Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete.
* High level of communication and interpersonal skills, effective team member.
* Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and themselves.
* Experience of assessing students’ needs and planning curriculum for their benefit.
* Good understanding of curriculum development to meet training needs of employers.


Desirable

* Experience of coaching and mentoring others.
* ICT qualification.
* Membership of a relevant professional body.
