PhD Studentship: EPSRC CDT Digital Metal – Advanced Barrier Coatings for Extreme Environments
Join to apply for the PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham, supported by Rolls‑Royce and funded through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). The role has an enhanced stipend and covers tuition and research training support.
Area: Engineering
Location: UK, Other
Closing Date: Wednesday 01 April 2026
Reference: ENG273X1
Background
Applicants are invited to undertake a four‑year PhD studentship within the Digital Metal CDT (https://digitalmetal-cdt.ac.uk/). The Centre for Excellence in Coatings & Surface Engineering at Nottingham is an international reference for thermal barrier coating (TBC) research. In partnership with Rolls‑Royce, the PhD programme aims to develop next‑generation thermal barrier coatings for aero‑engines.
PhD Project
Advanced TBCs are critical for high‑temperature aero‑engine components but are vulnerable to external contaminants such as calcium‑magnesium‑aluminium‑silicates (CMAS). This project will explore novel protective chemistries that can be deposited in‑situ to shield TBCs, combining advanced digital diagnostics, material science, coating technologies, and bespoke robotic thermal spray systems. The ultimate goal is to demonstrate that the proposed protective coatings can be applied during engine operation, bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial implementation.
Qualification
The candidate must hold, or be on track to obtain, an equivalent of a UK MEng 2.1‑class degree in materials, mechanical, manufacturing, chemistry or a closely related discipline with at least 70% in the project element.
Funding
The PhD studentship covers:
* Tuition fees at UK rates
* A tax‑free stipend of up to £26,780 per annum
* A £4,000 research training support grant
Application Process
Send a detailed CV, cover letter and contact details for two referees directly to Prof. Tanvir Hussain (tanvir.hussain@nottingham.ac.uk). Applications close on 1 April 2026 or until the position is filled.
