About us
Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and puts people at the core of its success.
The Role
Reporting to the Archivist (Storage and Access), the Archives Assistant plays a significant role in supporting access to the collections held by the Caird Library and Archive. This includes over 2 million archives, charts, maps, manuscripts; and a library collection of 100,000 modern printed and rare books, periodicals, and electronic resources. These collections illustrate the history of exploration, empire, navigation, and maritime endeavour.
The role involves providing front-line customer service duties on a rota basis which includes staffing the Reading Room, undertaking document retrievals (including those from out-stores), and answering email, postal and telephone enquiries. Further responsibilities include organising and cataloguing archive collections to enable researcher access to the rich stories contained within our world class collections and taking a lead in assisting with one of four areas of collections responsibility as advised by your line manager.
The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of databases and of general ICT packages with the ability to communicate confidently and effectively with members of the public, academics, specialist groups and colleagues alike. They must demonstrate a strong commitment to customer care and high standards of service provision and a flexible approach and willingness to assist colleagues and users of the collections.
This is a full time, permanent role in Band 7 - Coordinators. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management, although due to the nature of the role, some flexibility may be required.
