Project & Automation Engineer
Location: Nottingham | Schedule: Monday to Friday | Salary: £50,000-£60,000 DOE + Benefits
About the Role
We are recruiting for a forward-thinking food manufacturer in Nottingham seeking a talented Project & Automation Engineer to join their engineering team. This hands-on role is perfect for someone passionate about automation, machine control, and developing custom solutions in a fast-paced production environment.
You will have the opportunity to lead and support automation projects, build control panels, modify PLCs, and design custom mechanical systems to enhance uptime, reliability, and capacity. This role offers a unique chance to shape your workshop, influence equipment selection, and set future automation standards on site.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design and implement automation upgrades, including rig builds, line reconfigurations, and control improvements.
2. Build and wire control panels (including VFDs, PLCs, relays, contactors).
3. Program and troubleshoot PLC and HMI systems (e.g., Siemens, Omron).
4. Fabricate and install custom mechanical assemblies or production aids.
5. Install and calibrate sensors, actuators, solenoids, and safety devices.
6. Support machinery installations and trial new automation technologies.
7. Maintain detailed records of all projects and improvements.
8. Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, and H&S standards.
9. Collaborate across engineering, production, and technical teams.
10. Provide informal mentoring to junior engineers or apprentices.
What You'll Bring
* Strong experience in automation or controls engineering within food/FMCG/manufacturing sectors.
* Mechanical and fabrication skills; MIG/TIG welding is a plus.
* Proven knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and control logic.
* Hands-on problem-solving skills, comfortable building and integrating bespoke solutions.
* Familiarity with sensor systems, wiring, and troubleshooting.
* Confident communication skills with a proactive, collaborative approach.
* Knowledge of food safety or hygiene standards (e.g., HACCP/BRC) is beneficial.
