Job Purpose
To ensure the smooth running, safety, and upkeep of the community centre building and outdoor areas. The caretaker will carry out basic maintenance, fire safety checks, cleaning support, and ensure the centre is welcoming and fit for purpose for all users.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
* Open and lock up the building as required, ensuring the centre is secure.
* Carry out regular fire safety checks (alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting, evacuation routes) and keep accurate records.
* Undertake basic repairs, maintenance, and DIY tasks (e.g. changing light bulbs, fixing minor faults, painting, furniture setup).
* Ensure the outdoor areas are tidy and safe (sweeping paths, checking play areas, removing litter, light gardening as needed).
* Support with setting up rooms and moving furniture for events and activities.
* Monitor and report any health & safety or safeguarding concerns to the Centre Manager.
* Manage stock of cleaning and maintenance supplies.
* Liaise with contractors and service engineers when required.
* Carry out any other reasonable tasks to support the smooth running of the centre.
Person Specification – Caretaker
Essential
* Experience of building/site maintenance or DIY.
* Awareness of health & safety procedures, including fire safety.
* Ability to carry out physical tasks (lifting, moving, bending).
* Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently.
* Good problem-solving skills and initiative.
* Flexible and adaptable to the needs of the centre.
Desirable
* Experience of working in a school, community centre, or similar setting.
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures in community spaces.
* Basic gardening/grounds maintenance experience.
* First aid or fire safety training.

Pay: From £12.60 per hour
