The Sperry Marine Engineering Team based in New Malden in the UK and Hamburg in Germany, have responsibility for the development and maintenance of Sperry Marine’s wide product portfolio, and ambitious development roadmap.
We are a truly multidisciplinary team, with engineers from electronics, software, mechanical, system engineering and system test backgrounds all working in integrated teams to develop best in class products and solutions.
To support our ambitious roadmap and growth plans we are actively increasing the size our teams, creating a great opportunity for a skilled Principal FPGA Firmware Engineer to join us!
Key responsibilities of this role include:
1. Support the Chief Hardware Engineer and work in the Hardware team to develop FPGA firmware for new products
2. Be main expert in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in the Hardware Team.
3. Work on product developments to optimize and add new functionalities
4. Support the Embedded Software team and the System test team
5. Participate to Embedded Software development
6. Responsible of maintenance of FPGA toolkit (Vivado)
7. Participate to the design of filters and high speed ADCs

Skills & Experience
Skills and Capabilities
16. Experience is required in working with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in the context of firmware development and good knowledge of signal processing principles.
17. Must have good working knowledge of Image Processing techniques.
18. A working knowledge of High Speed ADC and DACS interfaces
19. A working knowledge of RF transceivers
20. Should be confident specifying (or designing) filters
Languages
21. A requirement for VHDL. Knowledge of Verilog is preferable.
22. Software languages, C (or C++) is preferable, additional languages considered useful.
Tool Chain Experience
23. Experience with Vivado is required and Xilinx (AMD) preferred
24. Familiarity with any other FPGA vendors' tools is a positive.
Systems Knowledge
25. Understanding of microprocessors, System on Chip (SoC) architectures, ARM microprocessors, and AXI bus interconnect.
26. Experience with memory interfaces, SDRAM and/or DDR.
Design Techniques
27. Knowledge of: Synchronous design, Finite state machines (FSMs), ADCs, DACs, FIFOs, DSP, data streaming, pipelining.
28. Asynchronous interfaces.
Scripting Languages
29. Knowledge of one or more of Bash, TCL, or Python.
Operating Systems
30. Experience with both Linux and Windows operating systems is important
31. Networking Protocols and Device Drivers:
32. Familiarity with networking protocols is preferable.
33. Good understanding of device drivers to facilitate integration within various systems.
General
34. Appreciation of circuit design and interfacing hardware within the context of overall designs.
35. Good experience of debugging using eval boards or other techniques.
