Our amazing special care baby unit at St Richards is looking for a qualified band 5 nurse to join our team on a fixed term basis for 9 months. We can offer supportive orientation and mandatory training.
We provide care for babies 32 weeks gestation and over and have 2 HDU cots and 10 special care cots. We work in the Thames valley and Wessex neonatal network and are a part of the UHSussex hospitals which cover Worthing, Brighton and Haywards Heath. We are working towards Family integrated care with families supporting them to learn how to care for their babies in preparation for discharge.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be a proficient clinical practitioner who will support the deputy sister and ward sister.
1. Act as a role model and ensure effective staff supervision with clinical practice, working with staff and patients in an advisory, teaching and support capacity and maintaining professional competence, authority and credibility.
2. Work collaboratively with clinical nursing experts including Heads of Nursing, Clinical Teams and Practice Development Nurses in the development of expert, personal centred practice.
3. Communicate effectively with the department team.
4. To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works.
5. Be able to work in a multi-professional environment ensuring most effective use of all members of those professional teams.

Service Delivery and Improvement
6. To maintain an awareness of Trust and National targets, ensuring that within the scope of your role you support their delivery.
7. To fully participate in the Trust’s appraisal system review and personal development planning process on an annual basis.
8. To undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with line manager as part of the personal development planning process.

12. Report patient / relative complaints to senior staff so that they can be dealt with proactively to minimise the risk of them becoming formal.
13. Report / action any accidents, incidents or undue occurrences reported or witnessed
14. Take an active role in Risk Management in line with Trust and Directorate policy.
15. Maintain flexibility with staffing rosters so they can be adjusted accordingly to provide cover with the required skill mix, making best use of resources available.
16. To work with the ward manager to ensure infection control procedures and cleanliness are observed on the ward.
Patient Care Delivery
17. Ensure that the needs of the neonates and their families are identified and programmes of care are implemented to meet individual patient and client needs, seeking guidance as appropriate.
18. Ensure that these programmes of care incorporate the Essence of Care, in order to reflect best practice.
19. Ensure effective discharge planning, involving the multidisciplinary team as necessary
20. To promote health education within the clinical area and advise families/carers and others in health promotion issues.
21. To teach nursing skills to parents and other carers
22. Be motivated in maintaining own professional development under the guidance of senior staff
23. Maintain accurate and effective record keeping.
24. Be aware of and work within current legislation and guidance relating to Child Protection.
Learning and Development
25. Attend mandatory training updates as required.
26. Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the line manager as part of the personal development process.
