Job Summary

Security Services Group (SSG) is the MOD’s Technical Authority for electronic and physical security providing in-house expert advice, design, installation and maintenance of electronic and physical security systems across Government, prioritised towards Secret and Above Secret, and items Attractive to Criminal and Terrorist Organisations (ACTO). SSG is part of GUARDIAN and is positioned within Standing Joint Command to support UK homeland security and resilience.

With an FTE of 325, SSG provides technical specialist ‘consultancy’ advice to projects to support the creation of design specifications through to commissioning; project management and delivery with through life maintenance; strategic and tactical compliance assurance reviews and audits across the business; an assured government use only Intruder Detection System built in-house; and security furniture services. Head of SSG is also the MOD’s Head of Specialism for Physical Security across the MOD (part of the Government Security Profession).

SSG’s Operational Delivery teams are the MOD’s specialist in-house security providers, delivering project management, design, installation and 24/7, 365 days a year maintenance of all aspects of electronic and physical security, with a global reach. SSG’s work is independently audited to ensure, ISO 9001:2015 and NSI compliance and accreditation as well as MOD’s own internal compliance regime. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

You must have the right of abode in the UK and have been ordinarily resident in the EEA (including other countries determined within the EEA or those with bilateral agreements), for at least the previous three years on the first day of learning.

Job Description

We are looking for Apprentice Security Technicians in the South West region. Security Technicians are Tasked from Home with the regional office based at Shrivenham. Through our apprenticeship scheme, you will gain professional knowledge, a recognised qualification, and essential skills to launch your career with SSG.

Our engineers are highly trained professionals, responsible for installing and maintaining security systems across the MOD and wider government departments. They work on a range of multi-million-pound projects in the UK and overseas.

On this 36-month Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician Apprenticeship, you’ll start with a two-week training and induction at SSG HQ in Shrivenham. This fast-paced and rewarding programme will give you hands-on experience, mentorship, and the opportunity to connect with talented professionals across our business.

You will attend an external training provider on a block-release basis (each unit lasting one week). Attendance is mandatory for qualification completion, with accommodation costs covered by the employer.

Your Apprenticeship Will Involve Supervised Training And Experience In:


* Intruder Alarm Systems (IAS)
* Automatic Access Control Systems (AACS)
* CCTV systems
* Control Room IAS, CCTV & AACS standard monitoring systems
* External & Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems

You will also complete mandatory training activities in line with your role and attend college periodically.

From the start, you’ll be assigned a mentor for guidance on your work and career. You’ll receive a full induction into SSG’s operations and become an integral part of our Apprenticeship Academy. You’ll also have opportunities to network with other apprentices, attend bi-annual apprenticeship events, and join workplace networks such as Race, Gender, LGBT+, Faith, and Mental Health.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, there could be further opportunities to apply for a permanent Skill Zone 4 Security Technician position both within the UK and overseas in Cyprus, Germany and Gibraltar.

Person specification

During Your Apprenticeship, You Will:

* Work towards achieving the Fire, Emergency and Security Technician Level 3 standard.
* Attain professional membership with the Engineering Council (EngTech registration upon successful completion).
* Be supported by your SSG Line Manager, Apprenticeship Manager, mentor, and tutors.
* Gain real-world experience with external contractors and consultants.
* Have potential opportunities to visit overseas sites.

We will support your technical development through practical on-the-job training and classroom learning, as well as professional development through courses, mentoring, and networking.

Requirements

* Must be 18 years or over at the start of the apprenticeship.
* Must have a Full UK Driving Licence.
* Must be willing to obtain Security Check level clearance.
* There may be a potential need to obtain DV at some point in the apprenticeship dependent on location requirements
* Please be aware that you are required to hold the qualifications stated as required and that unless otherwise stated in the advert a higher-level qualification cannot be accepted in lieu of the lower (E.G. an English Language A Level cannot replace the GCSE if the GCSE is not at the required grade)

* Interviews are planned to take place via Microsoft Teams OR Face to Face, week commencing 16th June 2025, however this may be subject to change.

The level of security needed is Security Check (SC) and you should usually have been continuously resident in the UK for 5 years immediately before clearance action commences. As a result of the changes to the UK immigration rules which came into effect on 1 January 2021, the Ministry of Defence will only offer sponsorship for a skilled worker visa under the points-based system, where a role has been deemed to be business critical.

The role currently being advertised has not been assessed as business critical and is therefore NOT open to applications from those who will require sponsorship under the points-based system.
