Location: North London
Job Title: Behaviour Mentor
Sector: Primary / SEMH / Inclusion
Contract Type: Full-Time, Long-Term (Term Time Only)
Start Date: ASAP or Next Term
Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience)

About the Role

A highly inclusive and forward-thinking primary school located in North London is seeking a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate Behaviour Mentor to join their pastoral and inclusion team. This role has been created to support pupils who present with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, behavioural challenges, and barriers to learning that impact their ability to succeed within a mainstream classroom environment.

The successful Behaviour Mentor will work closely with pupils on a one-to-one and small-group basis, supporting emotional regulation, behaviour management, and engagement with learning. This role is ideal for candidates with experience in education, youth work, psychology, social care, or mentoring, who are passionate about improving outcomes for vulnerable children.

Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

* Providing structured one-to-one mentoring sessions to pupils identified as requiring behavioural or emotional support

* Supporting pupils with SEMH needs, ADHD, trauma-related behaviours, anxiety, and attachment difficulties

* Implementing behaviour support plans, positive handling strategies, and individual risk assessments

* Supporting pupils during lessons to promote focus, engagement, and appropriate behaviour

* Working proactively to de-escalate challenging situations using restorative and trauma-informed approaches

* Supporting pupils during unstructured times such as break, lunch, transitions, and arrival/departure

* Monitoring and recording behaviour progress, emotional wellbeing, and engagement levels

* Liaising closely with class teachers, the SENCo, pastoral leads, and safeguarding officers

* Supporting reintegration into class following incidents, exclusions, or time out of class

* Encouraging positive relationships, resilience, self-esteem, and emotional literacy

The Ideal Candidate

The school is looking for a Behaviour Mentor who demonstrates:

* Previous experience working with children or young people with challenging behaviour or SEMH needs

* A calm, patient, and consistent approach to behaviour management

* Strong interpersonal and communication skills

* The ability to build trusting relationships with pupils who may be disengaged or resistant

* Emotional resilience and the ability to remain composed in challenging situations

* A genuine passion for inclusion, safeguarding, and child wellbeing

Experience in any of the following areas would be highly beneficial:

* SEMH schools or provisions

* Youth offending services

* Child mental health or psychology

* Care, residential, or support work

* Team Teach or positive handling training

School Environment & Support

This North London school is known for its strong pastoral ethos, supportive leadership, and commitment to staff wellbeing. You will be joining a collaborative team that values inclusion, professional development, and reflective practice. Behaviour Mentors are fully supported through regular supervision, safeguarding guidance, and access to external training.

The school promotes a trauma-informed and restorative approach to behaviour, ensuring pupils are supported holistically rather than punitively.

Safeguarding Commitment

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants must be willing to undergo enhanced DBS checks and provide relevant references.

Why Apply?

* Long-term, stable role within a supportive school

* Opportunity to make a genuine difference in children’s lives

* Ideal experience for aspiring teachers, psychologists, or social workers

* Ongoing training and career development

* Positive, inclusive working environment
