Staff Nurse – Pre-Assessment

The Role
We have a fantastic opportunity for a Staff Nurse to join the Pre-operative assessment team.
Working as part of the wider clinical team to provide a high standard of efficient, individualised patient care. A strong communicator with exceptional standards for customer service standards. Adhering to all of Ramsay’s policies and procedures to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes for patients. A strong advocate of the Ramsay Way and People Caring for People, we are looking for a candidate with demonstratable recent experience within the surgical pre-assessment environment to join our pre operative assessment unit. Ideally a candidate who has already undertaken pre-assessment course.
Clinical Duties
* Conduct holistic pre‑operative assessments, including medical history, medication review, and clinical observations.
* Identify clinical risks, optimise patients pre‑operatively, and escalate appropriately to anaesthetics, medical teams, or senior colleagues.
* Request and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., blood tests, ECGs, MRSA screening) in line with service protocols.
* Deliver evidence‑based advice on perioperative optimisation, fasting instructions, medication management, and postoperative expectations.
* Assess fitness for surgery using recognised assessment tools and pathways.
* Ensure accurate and timely documentation within electronic patient records.
Communication & Patient Support
* Provide clear, compassionate information to patients and carers regarding surgical preparation.
* Liaise with anaesthetists, surgeons, advanced practitioners, and other MDT members to ensure coordinated care.
* Manage challenging conversations sensitively, particularly regarding surgery postponement or optimisation needs.
Service & Quality Improvement
* Work within established clinical governance frameworks.
* Participate in audits, service reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
* Contribute to the development of pre‑assessment guidelines and patient pathways.
Professional Development
* Maintain professional registration and engage in ongoing clinical training.
* Mentor or support junior staff, students, and new starters as required.

The Woodthorpe Hospital is a 42 bedded private hospital on 2 wards offering multi-speciality surgery for day cases and inpatients stay for both private and NHS patients. It is a very busy Hospital with patients seen by many different speciality consultants including Orthopaedics, spinal, gynaecology, urology, gastroenterology, dermatology and ENT.
