Hours & Duration

Rotating week: 6:00 am – 2:00 pm or 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm. 5 days a week, 40 hours per week. Duration: 3 years 6 months.

What you’ll do at work

You will spend most of your apprenticeship working on the shop floor, learning from experienced technicians and gaining practical skills. Your day-to-day tasks will include:

* Assessing equipment requiring maintenance and formulating plans that outline methodology, timescales and resources.
* Carrying out preventive and reactive maintenance on electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power, and control systems.
* Using hand and machine tools to manufacture, repair or refurbish components.
* Applying dynamic risk assessment, isolation procedures and safe systems of work (COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, PPE).
* Recording and maintaining documentation such as job sheets, risk assessments, test results, handover reports and service records.
* Producing, updating and storing technical documentation, including PLC and robot programmes and electronic drawings.
* Conducting functional and condition‑monitoring tests, collecting data, and recommending improvements.
* Applying calculation techniques for feeds, speeds, tolerances, electrical and cable sizing using Ohm’s law.
* Communicating in writing and verbally with colleagues, negotiating access to equipment, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Training

In addition to on‑the‑job training, you will attend specialist training sessions and work‑based assignments led by IPS International Limited. The apprenticeship follows the Level 3 Mechatronics Engineering Technician Standard; you will spend four days a week in the IPS Rochester workshop, completing practical skills and one day a week studying the Technical Certificate.

Requirements

GCSEs in Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above). Applicants may also demonstrate other relevant qualifications or industry experience, which will be considered in the application process.

Skills

* Initiative and self‑direction in learning new skills.
