The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Design Coordinator to join our dynamic projects and maintenance teams focused on rail and civil engineering works. This role offers an excellent opportunity for professional development while contributing to a variety of exciting and complex multi-disciplinary civil engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities
As a Design Coordinator, you will play a central role in the coordination, administration and delivery of design information across a range of design-and-build rail and civil engineering projects. Your responsibilities will include:
Design Coordination & Administration
Coordinate and administer design information throughout all project stages.
Support organisational aspects of projects, including document control, requests for information (RFIs), technical queries and structured file management.
Ensure design documentation is delivered in line with the agreed design and submissions programme.
Coordinate the production, distribution and tracking of design information, reporting regularly on progress, status and required actions.
Administer the design management plan and support the design process from inception to completion.
Technical & Contractual Support
Contribute to the review of Employer's Requirements, identifying discrepancies, risks and key actions.
Ensure all identified risks are captured and maintained within the project risk register.
Assist in preparing appointment documents for design consultants and support the compilation of Contractor's Proposals.
Coordinate the review, comment and approval of design information in accordance with Employer's Requirements and project processes.
Support the completion and collection of design warranties from consultants and design subcontractors.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with design and construction teams to support cost planning, value engineering and design efficiency opportunities.
Attend regular design and subcontractor coordination meetings, ensuring issues relating to design delivery or changes in Employer's Requirements are discussed, recorded and actioned.
Train designers, subcontractors and project personnel in the use of relevant document management systems.
Coordinate the change management process with the design and project teams, providing regular updates on status and required actions.
Collaborate with other Design Coordinators across the business to share knowledge, improve processes and enhance overall design management capability.
Project Support & Continuous Improvement
Participate constructively in project reviews, contributing to lessons learned and continuous improvement.
Support additional tasks as required and authorised by line management to ensure successful project delivery.
Qualifications
To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:
Educational Background: Degree in a rail or civil engineering discipline
Professional Membership: Membership of an Engineering Institution providing Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it)
Relevant Experience: Prior experience as a Design Coordinator within a rail contracting environment, particularly in civil engineering
Process Understanding: Strong understanding of design delivery processes and management of design consultants
Commercial Acumen: Good grasp of commercial engagement and contractual management related to design consultancy
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with CDM regulations and understanding of designer and principal contractor roles
