We are a looking for a suitably experienced SBMS (Blood Sciences) to take ownership of the operational, quality and clinical leadership of Haematology and Biochemistry.
The Rivers Laboratory in Sawbridgeworth (near Harlow) supports six remote hospitals. The laboratory is staffed 24/7, and utilises efficient networks of couriers to collect and refer tracked samples between the hospitals and to the laboratories. Analysis is performed onsite according to the agreed onsite repertoire, this being Biochemistry Haematology and Blood Transfusion, and blood provision. Any further testing or samples for other disciplines are referred to our larger central laboratories in London. Roche, Sysmex and Haemonetics instrumentation is utilised, and we are transitioning to bespoke single LIMS systems across the entire network.
Main duties of the job
Applicants will have significant experience in one of these disciplines, with appropriate qualifications (MSc). The role will require at minimum day to day overview of processes including training, troubleshooting, operational reporting and trending, management of incidents, change controls, assets, risk and documentation. The role encompasses multidisciplinary working ,with training provided in other disciplines.
The successful applicant will be required to take part in the shift system which include weeknights and weekends rotations at addition renumeration.

Job responsibilities
Main dutiesTo include, but not be restricted to, the following duties:1. To supervise various grades of scientific & support staff2. To participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, whilst adhering to standard operatingprocedures and participating in their regular review and update.3. To participate in multidisciplinary working as required.4. Techniques and testing that include Haematology, Coagulation and Biochemistry5. To communicate patients results and answer enquiries from health care professionals within thehospital and in the community, providing information regarding appropriate investigationsrequired and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code ofconduct, recognising own boundaries.6. To interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens forappropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.7. Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types.8. To participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within thedepartment.9. To operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.10. To evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations usingappropriate quality control procedures.11. To interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system12. To check reports for further action by the Clinicians, and to authorise reports as delegated withinTDL departmental policy.13. To assist in the evaluation of new equipment and advise the head of service, senior scientificcolleagues on the need for new equipment and maintenance of existing equipment.14. To ensure that the department meets all the standards required by UKAS and to participate in theregular review of all the procedures performed in the laboratory including the establishment andmonitoring of effective internal and external Quality Control and Quality Assurance schemes
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registration with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist
* MSc in appropriate discipline such as Biomedical Science (or equivalent qualification e.g. IBMS HSD)
* Participation in a relevant CPD Scheme e.g. IBMS
Experience
* Theoretical and practical knowledge in discipline of pathology relevant to role.
* Previous experience in a relevant laboratory, and proficiency in techniques appropriate to the discipline.
