Build a career that protects people, supports businesses, and makes Derby safer every day.

This is more than a job — it’s the start of a profession.
At Derby City Council, we’re investing in the next generation of Environmental Health professionals. If you work in the food, enjoy problem-solving, and want a role where your work genuinely improves lives, this is a rare opportunity to join us with full training, qualifications, and a long-term career progression.

Why join us?
You’ll be part of a friendly, experienced Food and Safety Team that believes in learning, support and development. We’ll give you the skills, confidence and qualifications you need to grow — while you carry out work that protects public health across the city. You don’t need to already be an inspector — we’ll help you become one.

What you’ll experience
From day one, you’ll be involved in:

• Supporting food hygiene inspections and investigations.
• Helping businesses understand and meet their legal requirements.
• Assisting with complaints, sampling and compliance monitoring.
• Learning directly from qualified Environmental Health Officer’s.
Every day will be varied; it will be real work that makes a difference.

What we’ll invest in you
• A nationally recognised food safety qualification (fully funded).
• Structured training and one-to-one mentoring.
• Hands-on experience in regulation, enforcement and public protection.
• Flexible working and a supportive, inclusive team culture.
• Clear progression routes within Environmental Health

Who this Role is perfect for
This role is ideal if you:
• Work (or have worked) in the food sector at a supervisory level and want to progress.
• Enjoy dealing with people and solving practical problems.
• Want a secure, respected career with purpose.
• Are motivated to learn and develop professionally.

What You’ll Need
• GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grades 9–4 / A**–C in English, Maths and a Science.
• Willingness and ability to complete at least a Level 4 qualification.
• Experience dealing with the public and/or businesses, including complaints.
• An understanding of regulatory or enforcement processes.
• A full driving licence and access to a car.
• The physical capability to carry out inspections (a genuine occupational requirement).

Most importantly, you should bring enthusiasm, approachability, strong communication skills and a desire to make a difference.
