Clinical Director Derbyshire Pathology

An opportunity has arisen to appoint a Clinical Director for Derbyshire Pathology for a three‑year term.
Derbyshire Pathology is a contractual joint venture that provides pathology services to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and Chesterfield Royal Hospital, with laboratories in Derby, Burton and Chesterfield.
The purpose of the role is to provide clinical leadership and direction for Derbyshire Pathology across the full range of operational and strategic issues. The post holder will work in partnership with the Derbyshire Pathology Management Team to develop the service strategy and visions to deliver a safe, effective and efficient service for patients and users.
The role attracts a 3PA time allocation (12 hours per week).
Applications are invited from existing Medical Consultants, SAS Doctors and Consultant Clinical Scientists. Experience in Pathology is preferred; candidates with relevant clinical management experience will also be considered.
Job Responsibilities
The Clinical Director will provide senior clinical leadership across a multi‑site pathology network, working in partnership with the Business Unit Management Team to deliver high‑quality, sustainable and innovative diagnostic services.
* Lead the development and delivery of the Business Unit strategy, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and system priorities
* Provide visible and effective clinical leadership to multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and compassionate leadership
* Ensure safe, high‑quality services with accountability for clinical governance, patient safety and maintaining regulatory standards including UKAS accreditation
* Oversee operational performance, ensuring services meet national targets, local objectives and patient needs across the Derbyshire health system
* Drive service transformation and innovation to improve access, reduce variation, enhance patient experience and deliver value for money
* Lead workforce planning and development, including job planning, appraisal and professional development of clinical staff
* Embed robust governance, risk management and compliance processes across all services
* Hold responsibility for financial performance, including business planning, cost improvement programmes and efficient use of resources
* Collaborate with Trust colleagues, system partners and external stakeholders to support integrated service delivery and improved patient outcomes
Person Specification – Qualifications
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in a relevant pathology specialty, demonstrating completion of higher specialist training and eligibility for consultant‑level practice in the UK, or Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath), or equivalent
* At least 4 years clinical management experience in pathology
Person Specification – Experience
* Employed in a substantive Consultant, SAS Doctor, or Consultant Clinical Scientist post for at least 4 years, with experience in a lead clinician or significant management role
* Clinical governance experience
* Clinical incident management experience
* Demonstrable knowledge of UK cancer screening programmes, relevant pathology processes, quality standards and clinical governance requirements
* Knowledge and experience of ISO 15189:2022 and UKAS accreditation
