Job Description

The team you will join is the Monitoring Data & Systems Team (MDS). We manage important environmental monitoring systems and datasets. You’ll join a multi‑disciplinary team supporting and learning from colleagues while analysing and improving data that underpins our work. The Technical Officer helps manage these systems and data and provides support to users.

You will fulfil a multi‑purpose role, working on our Water Quality systems and data, but will also support other systems and data as needed. You will work closely with team members and can expect to be involved in any of the following:

* Set up and manage users
* Support users and resolve issues, especially when we move to our new My Environment application
* Update, improve and maintain datasets
* Respond to internal and external data requests
* Support system improvement and upgrade projects

If you have a passion for working with data/systems, a desire to improve our processes, and are keen to develop and learn new skills, this could be the right role for you.

All staff are required to undertake training and participate in incident response duties when needed. An incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment.

You will have access to our benefits package, including generous annual leave, excellent pension, flexible working arrangements, and extensive training to develop your career, including apprenticeships.

Experience / Skills Required

* Experience working with large, complex datasets
* Willingness to develop and learn new technical skills and apply them across our monitoring data and systems
* Motivated, organised, friendly and helpful, with an eye for detail, comfortable working in a dispersed team environment
* Proactive and enjoys solving problems
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to convey complex technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences
* Ability to build and maintain strong relationships, deliver through others and provide excellent customer service
* Desirable:
o Experience using and managing environmental monitoring data systems
o Experience with PowerBI, Access, Excel, Python, SharePoint Online and R
o Working knowledge of water quality monitoring

Work Location and Contact Information

Work location is flexible, but you must have a base at one of our offices across England and maintain presence there. We offer hybrid home/office working, with some travel expected for meetings. Interviews will be held via MS Teams towards the end of December / beginning of January.

An apprenticeship is available for the successful candidate.

If you would like to discuss the role further please contact: Damian Pharoah – damian.pharoah@environment-agency.gov.uk
