Job Description

Company Description

The Chinese Room Ltd. is a critically-acclaimed award winning games studio based in Brighton, UK.

We’re proud to be internationally recognised as pioneers of storytelling with a flair for creating atmospheric, rich and imaginative games.

Our recent title, Still Wakes the Deep won three Bafta awards earlier in 2025, for which we have released DLC content, Siren's Rest.

Our last title, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 released on the 21st October 2025.

Both Siren's Rest and Bloodlines two made the BAFTA longlist this year.

The Projects

We work on original games, or a Chinese Room spin on selected IPs. Our current projects are first-person action-adventure games for console and PC being developed exclusively using Unreal Engine 5; and we’re looking for world-class coders to join these exciting developments.

If this sounds like a place where you’d like to make games, then we’d love to hear from you.

Role Description

You’ll assist the code leadership with the design and development of the core gameplay and game systems. As well as being able to write high quality source code, you’ll encourage best code design practices within the code team. You’ll be working closely with the Studio Technical Director to develop and refine the technologies we use to create great content.

You’ll also author documents for technical designs and best practices for use by the rest of the team and plan work and meet deadlines designated for team projects.

What do we need from you?

As a seasoned software developer, you understand the creative processes involved in designing and maintaining good code.

You have a deep knowledge of current development tools and can learn and adapt to new systems quickly. You’re able to dig deep and have a proven track record of developing gameplay systems and supporting tools.

You can think critically and can apply analytical skills in resolving complex issues, a great problem solver that can jump into the code base to help fix the nastiest of bugs..

You’re also a great communicator and love working as part of a team where you play an active role in helping shape the game and its development.

You’ve got top notch C++ skills, experience at a senior level of development in Unreal Engine 5, and a passion turning complex code challenges into amazing gameplay experiences.

Ideally you will have shipped a few titles on PC and console.

Where do we stand on diversity?

At The Chinese Room, we know that diversity and inclusivity will make our teams better and pave the way to greater innovation and creativity in our work. We welcome ALL applications.

The Studio

Our titles include the ground-breaking Dear Esther (2012), cult horror Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (2013), the VR fairy-tale So Let Us Melt (2017) and the open-world adventure Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture (2015), a PlayStation 4 exclusive that won major awards across the world. This included an amazing 10 BAFTA nominations and 3 BAFTA wins. More recently we released Little Orpheus, an Apple Arcade exclusive, which won Best Mobile Game at the 2021 Develop Star Awards. Last year saw Still Wakes the Deep earn 3 BAFTA wins, and Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines 2 launched on the 21st of October.

We’re now working on other unannounced ‘AAA’ UE5 titles that will further establish our award-winning style and reputation.

We bring our passion and commitment to creating exciting original games to a network of studios renowned for quality and expertise.

The Chinese Room is located in Brighton in the south of England, home to an amazingly vibrant game development scene and a cultural hotspot with fantastic food, arts, music, shopping and sports. The studio is located within The Lanes of Brighton, a very central location a mere 5 minutes from the beach, and a short hop away from the South Downs National Park. Gatwick Airport is only half an hour away from train, and you can be in central London in just over an hour. It’s an easy place to love!

Our environment is relaxed, friendly and built upon the basis of every team member having the opportunity to shine and have a realisable input into the games we create. We’re in the amazing position of building a brand-new team, and creating a studio culture that’s all about passion, respect, diversity, fun and togetherness. We’re looking for people that love what they do and love to share their enthusiasm with each other.
