Locum Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us as a locum Congenital Cardiac Surgeon. This is a fixed‑term contract, 23‑month, commencing ASAP.
Job Overview
You will join a team of four congenital cardiac surgeons, 10 paediatric cardiologists and 5 ACHD cardiologists. The Congenital Cardiac Unit in Southampton is the Level 1 lead centre for the Oxford‑Southampton Congenital Cardiac ODN. All congenital cardiac services are offered in Southampton including congenital cardiac surgery for children and adults, cardiac ECMO, fetal cardiology, congenital cardiac CMR/CT, interventional cardiac catheterisation and all ACHD services.
The department provides the full range of paediatric, neonatal and ACHD congenital surgical services to a region with a population of approximately 5 million. Responsibilities
* Undertake the full range of general, specialist, elective and emergency duties of a consultant congenital cardiac surgeon.
* Perform the full range of congenital cardiac surgical lists, and additional supportive surgical procedures (e.g. ECMO).
* Perform congenital surgical 1:4 on‑call duties as required.
* Support all cardiac surgical care required on PICU and CICU.
* Support the development of excellent congenital cardiac services across the Oxford‑Southampton network.
* Perform duties in line with the agreed job plan and support the education of junior staff.
Qualifications, Training & Experience
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* MRCS or equivalent.
* Fully accredited for Specialist Training in Congenital Cardiac Surgery or Cardiothoracic Surgery (CCT or CESR).
* At least 3 years independent operating experience in congenital cardiac surgery (essential). Desired: experience in complex neonatal and ACHD procedures.
* Membership of relevant specialist societies or associations.
* Higher degree (MSc, MD, PhD or equivalent) is desirable.
Aptitudes and Skills
* Able to manage the full spectrum of paediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery.
* Independent management of cardiac ECMO patients (A&I) and safe cannulation.
* Effective teamwork and communication in a multi‑professional environment.
* Understanding of equality and diversity and its impact on patients, visitors and staff.
* Organisational skills, ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
* Calm, compassionate and able to respond efficiently to changing circumstances.
* Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
